The plot of this deafening, atmospheric movie is based on the diary of a Spanish monk - the only thing left from one missing expedition sent by Pissaro. Of course, one may ask - what is the point of this meaningless campaign on the scale of history? But the point is exactly in the scale of history and can be seen. The film is a hymn to the thirst for power, ambition, greed, in short, to all those forces that built some civilizations and states and conquered others. It is only through such a mad desire for power that one can reach his Eldorado.
And naturally to realize the idea of Herzog in the portrayal of such an obsessive desire to become the lord of the Golden City, superhuman could only one actor - Klaus Kinski, an actor with crazy energy and outstanding charisma. He does not play - such crazy eyes cannot be “played”, it can only be experienced and then carry this chaos and constantly with him. And when there is Kinski in the frame, all the others become just a background, this man simply burns out the space around his person - it is hard to imagine a more identical performer of this role.
And thanks to the special, almost documentary style of shooting, and the soundtrack, similar to some ritual melody, the film mesmerizes and immerses into this atmosphere, creating almost the effect of presence.
This strange ritual music is one of the foundations of this movie - it sounds like a Requiem, creates the necessary mood of inevitability and makes it clear to the viewer from the very beginning, to whom the fate of the victims is destined - of course, all these little men - his compatriots and slaves, the biomass in the eyes of Aggire, whom he drives with an iron hand to his own immortality. And the little men fulfill their sacrificial purpose - they die with a sense of doom, one by one, from Indian arrows, disease or the hand of their mad leader.
Until Don Aguirre is left alone on the raft, surrounded by corpses. But no, this loneliness is not complete - a bunch of small monkeys run to the raft from somewhere. On the one hand, you might think that the director thus condemned the protagonist - say, since he considered his neighbors as inferior beings and subhumans, so let him get a worthy company. But, you know, it feels like Herzog simply admires his hero and treats him with sincere sympathy. And how could it be otherwise? Only such, by modern standards, schizophrenics, marginalized, psychopaths and scumbags as Don Aguirre and made history.
The road to power and, consequently, to history is wide, but the way there is for those who keep moral principles and love for people. It's just not a fact that if you kill the person inside you, you will necessarily be lucky.
