It's long been fashionable to make movies in 3D, if it's not even really needed there. But that all changes when the king of the three-dimensional image, James Cameron, arrives. The quality of 3D effects keeps the level, although it is not always necessary in movies of such genre as “Sanctum”, but in this case it doesn't interfere in any way. And in some moments it gives to admire the beauty of underwater caves almost as if to look at them live, which is not available to every person.

The beginning of the movie is quite calm, an ordinary expedition, during which a group of speleologists is trying to find a way out to the sea from the largest network of caves in the world. Many kilometers under the ground have already been passed and nothing foreshadows trouble, as suddenly two days earlier begins a tropical storm, as a result of which the exit from the cave piles up, and to the underground place of residence of the group of researchers begins to arrive water. Under such circumstances, the team of courageous speleological divers has nothing left but to swim deeper into the underwater caves, where their last salvation should be - an underground exit to the sea. Hundreds of tons of water, lack of oxygen and endless caves can drive anyone crazy, but not the organizer of the whole expedition, played by Richard Roxburgh. His character constantly has to be strong and be able to make only the right decisions, no matter how hard and inhumane they may seem, because the lives of everyone in the cave in this difficult situation depend on him, including Reese Wakefield as his son. At the beginning of the movie Reese plays a boy who has only entertainment on his mind, but throughout the movie he will grow spiritually and morally and will turn into a real man capable of passing this difficult test by the end. The third key character among the trapped is the expedition sponsor Carl, played by Ioan Griffith. Who of the small group of survivors, cut off from the rest of the world and almost doomed to failure will not chicken out, will show all his will to live, will retain a human being and get to the sea alive?

This is definitely one of the most intense movies of recent times, while watching it you can literally feel the oppressive atmosphere of the inevitability of the end and the gravity of the rocks hanging over the heroes. The film absorbs so much that when one of the characters is submerged under water, you involuntarily hold your breath and hold it until you realize that there is air around you, and you are now in a movie theater, not at the depths. It is unlikely that the creators of the picture would have such a well-balanced action-drama if it were not for the maestro of modern cinematography James Cameron. Most likely, there is no such person who has never watched any of his movies or at least not heard his name. After “Avatar” Cameron raised the bar of his skill even higher, thus making it clear that if his name is on the list of creators, then this movie is doomed not only to pay off, but also to be a good enough representative of its genre.

“Sanctum” unequivocally deserves attention and is not a movie for once. A good, strong picture that can take a worthy place in the library of any movie buff.
