User Review

Waited for the release of this movie for three years, regardless of the ripe seeds of skepticism in the twists of my brain. Nowadays there are a lot of remakes, and they often have no soul or thought compared to their predecessors. I'm not even talking about the billion-dollar “Rings of Power” that failed to live up to fan expectations. When it comes to such cinematic diamonds as “Ben-Hur”, “Braveheart”, “Troy”, “Lord of the Rings”, one can't help but wonder what guides certain producers and directors who dare to encroach on the “sacred”.

Ridley Scott is a superb artist who manages to recreate the historical era like no other living and present-day movie makers. But even with the title of one of the most successful directors in Hollywood and a great legacy, one cannot overlook the very obvious fact that age does its work. 86 years old is a very dangerous age for a director, even a famous one. In the early noughties, when the first “Gladiator” was created, Ridley was quite capable of making certain artistic aspects and decisions in the process of shooting and editing. On the second part it seems that the grandfather was manipulated quite often at almost all stages of creation, and I'm not even talking about the wild monkeys in the arena and sharks in the Colosseum, which generally fall out of the general rut of reasonableness, especially when we talk about the historical component of the movie. Even “Kingdom of Heaven” I didn't have much of a problem with based on these considerations.

As for the acting cast, it's not all that clear-cut. Denzel is a master of his craft, you believe almost every frame in which he appears, I had no doubts that he will cope with his role to the fullest. As for the actor in the role of young Lucius, of course, you can see that he tries his best, but for the title role he lacks charisma and zest, alas, neither his game nor his appearance as his predecessor General Maximus. It would be more sensible to prepare for this role Spencer Trit Clark played Lucius in the original movie to support little spirit of nostalgia. The actors who played Emperors Caracal and Geta did well with their images, you can feel the influence of not only the game Phoenix in the previous “Gladiator”, but also Jack Gleason from “Game of Thrones”. Pascal as General Acasius may not get much screen time, but he played this time with all the nobility and diligence of a professional actor.

The soundtrack is sparse, alas lacking the soulful sound of the original movie, including the soul-crushing playing of the now deceased master of the Armenian duduk, Jivan Gasparyan.

If you ask me if “Gladiator 2” has the right to exist, I will say: why not, but when an author makes a movie, he should first of all emphasize the plot and the root concept.

“Gladiator” with Russell Crowe is the story of a general who became a slave, a slave who became a gladiator, a gladiator who defied the empire, sacrificed himself for the good of Rome and reunited with his murdered wife and son in a better world. Even as I type these lines, tears come to my own eyes. The profound meaning of Maximus' hallucinations and visions throughout the movie are spiritualized with peculiar art house elements that can't help but tug at even the most vicious critics. The story and plot are extremely important.

The new “Gladiator” alas compensates for the holes in the plot with colorfulness and spectacle, I would even say excessive pomp, there is no logical ending of the story, the last scene in the Colosseum is certainly touching and nostalgic, but at the same time there is a feeling that the author could not think of anything else and such an end is exhibited purely for the sake of a tick.
