After the demise of technological civilization, magic and monsters returned to the world. On a secret mission from the queen, the witch Grey Alice sets off from the last city on Earth to the dangerous Lost Lands. Together with her guide Boise, she must find the source of power that can turn humans into beasts before the full moon. The travelers are pursued by a ruthless army of crusaders, and creatures of darkness await them at every turn.
Let's start with the fact that this film does not present anything particularly new in terms of its script. Perhaps George Martin's work served as the basis for this film. However, in reality, the story of this film is perceived as a complication of ideas and plots from various other films, which are mixed together in one pot. At the same time, it should be noted that the story develops in a quite exciting way and is quite appropriate for a one-time viewing. In this regard, the open ending and the attempt to lay the foundation for an entire franchise seem weak and far-fetched.
Despite all the flaws in the script, Paul Anderson's direction is not bad. As sterile and uninspired as Anderson's adaptation of the game Monster Hunter was, the direction of this film looks diligent. But certainly with reservations. The visual part of the film is interesting and tasteful. Fully aware of his budget constraints, Anderson deliberately opted for an eclectic screen world similar to that of Jamin Wainwright's films. However, the impression is spoiled by the soapy picture with a repulsive yellow filter and murky visuals. This also affects the perception of the action scenes, which, by the way, are quite well done in terms of staging.
Milla Jovovich appears on screen in her traditional role. Change the heroine's hairstyle and her name, and you will see the same Ellis that she played in all parts of Resident Evil and in the above-mentioned adaptation by Paul Anderson. Dave Bautista looks much more interesting. But again, nothing groundbreaking. Arly Jover slightly overacts. But she also looks very confident in the role of one of the central antagonists of this film.
