A new take on the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises.

User Review

Interestingly, critical and audience ratings for the Jurassic Park revival trilogy steadily declined to the minimum acceptable levels, but this did not prevent Universal Studios from consistently making money. That is why the producers decided not to take a long break between Dominion and the next installment of the successful series. It was important to retain the fan base, who would gladly appreciate another creation from the world of dinosaurs, and in 2025, director Gareth Edwards presented us with Rebirth, which repeated the formula of each of the previous parts of Jurassic World: audience and critic ratings are low, but box office receipts are excellent. Jurassic World'—audience and critic ratings were low, but box office receipts were excellent.

A few years after Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, Owen Grady, and other heroes of Colin Trevorrow's trilogy managed to stop a greedy corporation's plans to create genetic mutants, dinosaurs practically ceased to exist. The current Earth climate is completely unsuitable for them, which is why some populations of reptiles have survived only on a couple of islands near the equator. Now this is a protected area where no one is allowed. However, another company, this time a pharmaceutical one, decides to make an excursion to one of these islands to obtain priceless blood samples from the largest monsters.

The expedition is led by Zora Bennett, who is capable of obtaining almost anything she is asked for. She takes Captain Kincaid, with whom she has carried out various risky operations on more than one occasion, as her right-hand man on the mission. The key scientific specialist in this company is Dr. Henry Loomis, who is not so much interested in the money for the mission as in the opportunity to see dinosaurs in their natural habitat. However, the closed island, as usual, carries great danger, and it is far from being of a natural nature. Mysterious experiments were once conducted here to create new species of dinosaurs, and some specimens still roam freely on the ground and devour anyone who comes into their sight.

Compared to the previous installments, Rebirth reduces the scale of the story to a single island and the surrounding waters. The film's budget has also decreased compared to the latest films in the Jurassic World series, and this is noticeable in places. To stretch out the running time, the characters played by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali are forced to repeatedly recall their past and endlessly reflect on it. That wouldn't be a problem if the conversations were interspersed with excellent action scenes. But no — instead of entertaining us with clashes with dinosaurs, Gareth Edwards keeps breaking into conversations with his characters, and it's actually annoying because there's nothing particularly exciting about it. We already know who the characters are, and their memories don't add anything to the picture.

I'm also not particularly happy with the secondary storyline involving a family vacationing on a yacht near the island, who also fall prey to the dinosaurs. These characters come across as boring and unnecessary. What's more, they have a very unpleasant tendency to annoy with their antics and behavior. Of course, the unlucky family will inevitably have to cross paths with the main characters in order to survive together, but I can't say that this greatly affected my perception of these characters, who are simply unnecessary here.

The only action scenes that made a big impression on me take place on the water, and there are catastrophically few of them. That's where the ocean, boats, and great underwater danger make for interesting viewing. Everything else that happens directly on the island is very disappointing in its mediocrity. And with all this, it is surprising that such a film has grossed more than $850 million at the global box office. I can't call it anything other than a franchise phenomenon.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is another unimpressive blockbuster in the series. Gareth Edwards has created a rather clichéd and slow-paced film that has become a global box office phenomenon, but it will never be a classic on par with Spielberg's 1993 film.
