“Mortal Kombat”—even today, that name evokes something magnificent from childhood, something that can no longer be recaptured when watching it now, memories of a time when the fantastical worlds of that great video game felt truly real. Childlike excitement, an unforgettable soundtrack, superbly designed and visually authentic characters, and, of course, an excellent screenplay that tells a complete story—all of this is the movie "Mortal Kombat".

I still remember my utter disbelief when my classmates told me there was a movie based on the famous video game "Mortal Kombat". Verifying this in the mid-1990s was much harder than it is today. There was no internet or any themed TV shows. The proof came in the form of a VHS tape a friend gave me. Imagine my surprise when I saw familiar characters on the screen. It was an indescribable thrill that I still remember to this day. A movie based on a video game was already a godsend, but decades later, I realize that this film isn’t just an adaptation of the game—it’s a true embodiment of an entire mythology on screen.

The film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who is well known today. It was a success, and the film is still well worth watching today. Compared to similar projects—including the dreadful "Street Fighter" and "Double Dragon"—"Mortal Kombat" stands out on its own. The creators managed to tell a coherent story of the universe by weaving together the stories of several popular characters from the game. The screenplay moves at a leisurely pace but essentially focuses on character development, exploring the struggles of each main character and teaching not only young viewers but also the characters themselves the value of true friendship, self-belief, and the path to unity.

The film is full of fan service, as they say these days. It features the most famous and beloved characters, pitting some of them against each other in deadly battles set to a phenomenal soundtrack—one that even today makes you want to put it on just to enjoy the splendor of the music. The musical compositions were so well-received by audiences and fit the scenes so perfectly that, as kids, we searched everywhere for audio cassettes so we could literally wear our favorite tracks out by listening to them over and over.

Despite its modest budget of $18 million, the film delivers excellent visuals. It features a wealth of fascinating locations, superb sets, cool costumes, and impressive visual effects. All of this comes together to create a fully realized world that feels truly believable.

The actors are great, too. Everyone is perfectly cast. The main characters are played by Christopher Lambert, Robin Shaw, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Linden Ashby, Talisa Soto, and Bridget Wilson. The actors did an excellent job of conveying their characters’ unique qualities and were well-prepared for the fight scenes. Of course, you don’t realize this as a child, but now you understand just how much serious physical training is required to make the fight scenes so beautiful and dynamic. To be fair, we must also mention the film’s antagonists, who were brilliantly portrayed by other martial arts actors. Among them are Trevor Goddard, Chris Casamassa, François Petit, Keith Cook, Hakim Alston, and others. The entire team’s dedicated approach made for a true feast of combat, allowing viewers to enjoy literally every single fight.

"Mortal Kombat" still “lives” somewhere deep in my heart, in that special “corner” of childhood memories, when everything was so much simpler, and our favorite heroes seemed to literally step off the screen, bringing cinematic reality to life. The film was one of the first of its kind, but more importantly, it turned out to be a truly high-quality project with a well-crafted screenplay, interesting and memorable characters, and an unforgettable story.
