Tired of killing, John Rambo lives in a Buddhist monastery. There, he has found humility and peace. He lives in harmony with himself and the world. And when the government tries to call on its loyal soldier to help with combat operations in Afghanistan, he finds the strength to refuse. Not even the fact that the operation is led by Colonel Trautman—the man who raised him and saved his life more than once—can sway him. But the operation fails, and the colonel is taken prisoner. He has virtually no chance of survival. And then, remembering what he owes the colonel, Rambo sets off for Afghanistan to rescue his mentor.

User Review

I’ve wanted to watch the second and third installments for a very long time, since I saw them when I was very young and didn’t understand almost anything.

The plot is typical of a sequel (or prequel) to American action movies from the mid-’80s.
John lives in a Buddhist monastery and makes ends meet by fighting in the ring. Then his commander shows up and offers to take him to Afghanistan. To which Rambo replies with his famous line: “My war is over!” However, his commander is taken prisoner, and John sets out to rescue his comrade-in-arms.

What I liked about this movie: Stallone got even more ripped, and the special effects and stunts are still top-notch.

Now for the downsides: the movie is, to put it mildly, stupid! I just found it laughable every time they showed the Russians. Apparently, we’re the monsters—we’re the ones destroying the peaceful Afghan people with napalm! And the valiant Americans are defending them. Ridiculous! And in Vietnam, they didn’t kill civilians! No! That was an accident!
But the funniest part is at the end of the movie. The caption before the credits reads: “This film is dedicated to the valiant people of Afghanistan.” Twenty years ago they called them valiant—but what about now? Terrorists, right?

After an excellent first installment and a very high-quality second one, the third one just pales in comparison! The first one was the most dramatic, the second less so, but still dramatic. The third, however, is just a mindless action flick. Stallone has lost all the emotional depth he had in the first two films and has turned into the Terminator! To at least somewhat preserve an element of drama—just for show—they added a little Afghan boy to the script.

I hope the fourth installment doesn’t repeat such nonsense and will be more like the first and second.
