The famous but not super-popular lead singer of a girl pop group Mima Kirigoe announces that she is ending her pop career and going into television acting. Her fans are outraged, but Mima's managers support the girl as they believe she will earn more as a TV star. At first, Mima gets only a cameo role, but then the authors of the series decide to make her the main villain - a rape victim going crazy. As the girl “tarnishes” her pristine image, people die around her, and Mima, slowly losing touch with reality, begins to suspect that she commits crimes not only on the screen, but also in life.

User Review

This is the most interesting anime thriller I've ever watched. It's so captivating from the very first frames, that after a few minutes of the movie you forget that you're watching a drawn movie, and after the end of the movie you want to say: 'How wonderful this actress played Mima!'
It's not just the intricate intrigue of the narrative. The individual shots are very interesting; at first the slow and dragging rhythm as the plot develops gathers momentum, the dynamics builds up, the shots become sharper, the editing more nervous. The bright candy-colored world of the pop idol and idol of teenagers suddenly turns to the viewer a completely different side, which we have never seen before and only guessed about its existence, the side where infectious madness, hypocrisy, cruelty and shattered illusions rule. It feels as if the smile of a cute clown has suddenly transformed into the cruel grin of a predator, which gives you goosebumps.
Mima, of course, is the most interesting character of this picture, but all the other actors, though they take less screen time, are no less good. Besides, when we think that we have already figured everything out, the creators of the movie throw in another plot twist and we have to find new threads of the plot's unraveling. What's really scary is Mima's anonymous admirer, who throughout the movie seems quite real to us at times, and at other times - truly illusory.
However, 'Perfect Blue' is not so much a psychological thriller as a drama about the cruelty of the backstage of show business and the wolfish mores that reign in it. In the end, both Mima herself and her immediate surroundings are just shards of her own shattered dreams, aliens from Neverland.
So at some point the question becomes: Did Mima really exist?
