Princess Moana embarks on a new journey at the call of her ancestors.

Admittedly, I was extremely surprised to see the poster for the second part of 'Moana' in the theater schedule, although I try to keep an eye on new releases throughout the year. Without giving it much thought, I bought tickets and went to the movie theater with the hope of having a good time. However, as it turned out later, one fact about this cartoon, in my opinion, it is necessary to learn in advance, before the opening credits. But let's talk about everything in order....
Plot. Moana has become a chief. Having opened for her people traveling by sea, she becomes an idol for the entire population of the island. Her everyday life the heroine explores the neighborhood of her home island in the hope of finding other people. One of her forays proves successful: she finds traces of life, a shard from a clay bowl, which entrenches the idea of moving in the right direction. In a nightly visit (vision), the ancestor reveals to Moana why the connection was lost: the evil storm god Nalo wanted power over mortals, so he plunged the legendary island of Motufeta, which connected all the islands, into the depths of the ocean. Realizing that such an adventure alone cannot be pulled out, she assembles a team to reconnect with other peoples.
The main question that arises is: why would she do that? In the first part, the motivation for going to sea was clearly spelled out: crops on the island were rapidly decreasing, and fish had practically disappeared from the lagoon. Here, however, the following was said in passing in this vision: if Moana can't find a way to bring Motufeta back from underwater, there will be no humans left on Motunui in the future. But why? No overpopulation has been noticed, livestock and horticulture development is at a good level, shipbuilding is also in full swing. This is not motivation, but some kind of horror story: 'Babaika is coming, we must go on an unreasonable journey'.
The crew assembled for the voyage deserves special attention: a grandfather-gardener who tried to grow food in a dark hold without a single quantum of light, a genius-constructor (of course, in modern realities it's a sociopathic girl), and a silly-silach who really wanted to see Maui. I didn't see a dire need for a team, as Moana handles all the difficulties on her own. These characters come out of nowhere, don't get much development, and then go back in. Exactly the same situation happens with the antagonists of the cartoon: the female mouse Matangi and the god of storms Nalo, whose plot branches remain abandoned. Obviously, there's clearly something missing here!
At this point, I'll drop the main intrigue of my post: 'Moana 2' is a children's series project for Disney+, which they hastily decided to remake into a full-length movie in early 2024 (February) due to the illiquidity of streaming and the dire need for something to plug the theaters, which were empty due to a writers' and actors' strike. That's why I knew nothing about the sequel coming out: it wasn't in the plans in early 2024. That's why there are so many plot holes, abandoned arches and derelict characters: they were simply cut. 'Moana 2' is a white thread sewn from selective scraps that falls apart at the first whiff of wind. It's pointless to compare it to the first part, as they are projects of a completely different level. It was originally made to shut up airtime, and then hastily chopped and let it into theaters. There are no songs and dialogs. The whole project clings to the first part and tries to just make a similar adventure to entertain children. But after all, children also have the right to decent entertainment! It is not enough for him good graphics and a couple or three comedy scenes. You need a good solid script work, and this is a priori impossible in such conditions. The most frustrating thing in all this is that because of ignorance and lack of understanding of the situation, the audience went to the movies and brought the cartoon a good box office. It paid off, collecting almost a billion dollars at a cost of 150 million. The studio, much screwed up in the production, managed to make money. And that means that something like this is very likely to happen again!
