Kenji Koiso can't resist the tempting offer of a beautiful classmate, Natsuki-sempai, who takes him to the family estate to celebrate the 90th birthday of the family's elder. Had he known how this trip would turn out, he never would have agreed to it! Before that, the 17-year-old schoolboy had lived peacefully in virtual reality, preferring the “Land of OZ” to the tangible world, and as a result of his reckless act became a samurai in both worlds.

User Review

Gentlemen, anime fans, admirers of Mamoru Hosoda's talent, it's quite simple. If you've seen his first full-length work, the adaptation of the Digimon saga, do not watch this movie under any circumstances. You'll inadvertently get a sense of déjà vu. Why?!

The beginning of the movie is great. Pleasant characters, warm description of summer, unpretentious jokes and dialogues, then generally fairy tale ... If you are from the province, or just know what a BIG family is, you'll love the meeting of the main character with his girlfriend's family: very, very similar, homely and just nice. But then comes a certain collapse that releases a certain train of thought in your brain: where did the director go and who came in his place!?

It's an absolute replica of the storyline from Digimon: The Movie. Except instead of Digimon there are avatars, instead of Tamers there are OZ users, and instead of a timer reporting until the rocket falls, there's a timer reporting until the satellite falls. Uh-huh. The space of the Internet is simply copied from the above-mentioned movie, the villain is just a little bit adjusted, but even the idea of evolution was safely stolen from there. And in the end, our sweaty exhausted heroes are helped by kind children from all over the world. That's right.

In the end, I don't want to say that all of the above is negative towards this creation, but just a warning. I've been a big Digmon fan since childhood, ‘The Girl Who Conquered Time’ is also on my favorites list, but what the author wanted to show with ‘Summer Wars’ remains a mystery to me. Why shoot something that has already been shot, only under a different name? Maybe it's style, maybe he just didn't get saturated, maybe it's commerce..... but we'll wait for new feats.
