Latvian 30-year-old animator, created his animated film 'Flow' on the free software 'Blender'. This animation became one of the major achievements of the world cinema of 2024, conquering both critics and viewers.
'Flow' is a vivid proof of the rightness of the statement 'everything genius is simple'. Not a single word is spoken in this animated movie. It is filmed with the imitation of immersion in virtual game reality. And the plot is built around an archetypal and elementary event - animals are rescued from a flood in one boat.
The main character of the story is a black cat. One day, while he was trying to steal fish from the dogs, his usual life instantly and irrevocably collapsed. A huge wave hits him. The flood inundates first the land, then the house, and afterward even the mountains.
From death the cat is saved by chance - he gets into a boat inhabited by a sleepy capybara. And then other animals join them.
'Flow' is not a Disney cartoon. Animated characters here look and behave in many realistic ways. And instead of a fairy tale story about friendship, we see a rather deep study of the basics of the social structure of the living world.
Of course, watching the misadventures of animals in the cartoon 'Flow' viewers will inevitably come to the realization that this is all a metaphor for human history. We will be shown the struggle for power, the change of leaders, the clash of different life values, revolution, war and defeat in it. We will see how the right decisions lead to collapse, and salvation is facilitated by mistakes and accidents.
In this respect, 'Flow' is a vivid ideological project that proclaims the value of mutual aid and equality, criticizes our usual values and attachments, and asserts the need to destroy the old and create a new world.
This idea is quite common in movies of recent years. Another high-profile animation from 2024, 'Wild Robot', is about exactly the same thing. Only it addresses the audience with a different animation language.
But 'Flow' has one huge advantage - it very subtly and yet explicitly touches on a topic that plays a crucial role in the modern world order and yet never enters the realm of open mass discourse. For someone to abandon old values, he must not only change himself, but inevitably must say goodbye to his former environment.
The heroes of this cartoon encounter groups of related animals and each time it turns out that being in this group and sharing their way of life is wrong. This is demonstrated especially vividly in the episode with the dogs. The captain of the boat realizes that if they pick up a few dogs, the balance of power will be instantly disrupted and it will become impossible to exist in peace. He wants to do the seemingly horrible act of throwing these dogs to their deaths. His leadership is eventually overthrown, the dogs end up in the boat and it does turn out to be a mistake.
But 'Flow' is not trying to promote ideas of nationalism at all. On the contrary, this cartoon proclaims that absolutely all attachments to the group of 'one's own' and the delineation of 'others' is a total destructive mistake. The world is very much divided into factions that only care about their own interests. It is convenient and easy to be part of one such grouping. It is equally easy to be selfish and look out solely for yourself and your own interests, as the cat did at the beginning of the story. But 'Flow' loudly proclaims a forgotten truth - 'your own' can easily refuse to help you if safety is replaced by danger. And if help does come, it will not be on the principle of 'friend versus foe', but on the principle of 'right versus wrong', 'good versus evil...'.
