Four pampered animals from the Central Park Zoo in New York - Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippopotamus - decide to escape. Having found themselves after a shipwreck on the exotic island of Madagascar, inhabited by lemurs and fossas that eat them, the travelers realize with horror that they will have to say goodbye to their city habits. There are no people, no beloved cages, no tasty food. The show "Survivor" begins only with animals - our friends need to survive in an unfamiliar habitat, where danger lurks at every step...

User Review

The beginning of the trilogy for children and adults about the journey of four African animals in search of themselves looks quite lively and fresh even after years. The screen time is divided in the right proportions into jokes that are interesting to children, jokes that adults will appreciate, and important educational moments, without which no full-fledged animation can do.

The characters of the animals are well drawn through situations and divided into psychotypes. The anxious giraffe and the proud lion are especially beautiful. In the characters and behavior of the animals, both children and adults can easily see references to situations that remind them of acquaintances or even themselves, but this does not hurt, because although it is presented with light irony, but without mockery and excessive mockery.

I liked how the themes of friendship, forgiveness, understanding and reconciliation with one's inner nature are shown here. They do not steal the show, are not served directly, but are conveniently packaged for discussion with schoolchildren, who are the main age audience of the project. Doubts, the desire to see what is hidden, friendship and mutual assistance ultimately lead the heroes out of their comfort zone into the wild environment in order to eventually change them for the better and make them think about what is really important. This is an excellent basis not only for this picture, but also for understanding the two following ones.

A separate successful find is the penguins. So successful that they lived much longer than the main franchise and got their own series. Like the main characters, there are four of them, and this could not help but give rise to reflections on parallels in characters and other connections. However, despite the fact that we can easily put “our” penguin in a pair with each main character, their characters are more similar in some features than similar.

The second successful find is King Julian and his retinue. They will be revealed much more strongly in the second part of the film, but there are interesting moments here too, the most significant of which seems to be the line of the huge unconditional, truly Pushkin-level love of little Mort for his king.

An excellent example of Western animation. If you suddenly missed it, it makes sense to spend an hour and a half and catch up. No matter how old you are.
