Will Harris, a goat, gets a unique chance to turn pro in goat wrestling, a contact sport dominated by the biggest and strongest animals. His new teammates aren’t thrilled to have such a small creature on their roster, but Will is determined to change the sport once and for all.

The title works on two levels here. On the one hand, GOAT literally means “goat,” and on the other, it’s the sports acronym for “Greatest of All Time.” And the entire cartoon is built around this idea: what it means to be great, whether you can live up to your idol, and how to make your way to the top when everyone around you has already decided that you’re not cut out for the game.

In the story, Will Harris is a young goat who promised his mom as a child that he would become a great athlete and one day play for his favorite team. When the chance finally comes, it turns out that dreams alone aren’t enough: he has to fight through the contempt of bigger players, the customs of a league where small players aren’t taken seriously, and a very painful encounter with reality in the form of his own idol, the panther Jett Fillmore. And this, in my opinion, is where the cartoon finds its main emotional core: not just a story about “the little guy who proved himself to everyone,” but a story about a relationship with an idol you once imagined for yourself, only to later come face to face with him. This storyline, as far as I’m concerned, is what holds the film together.

Yes, the plot here isn’t perfect. If you watch with a stone face and a desire to nitpick, you’ll quickly find moments of oversimplification. This isn’t the kind of cartoon that aims to surprise with complex drama or reinvent the underdog sports story. But, honestly, this cartoon has a different goal. It doesn’t try to overload the viewer with unnecessary details; it wants to entertain, energize, move, and beautifully convey a very relatable motivational story. And in that sense, it works.

I’d like to say a few words about the characters. All the main characters here are vividly portrayed; each has their own distinct personality and energy. My favorite is Modo. This monitor lizard is just incredibly cool. There’s a kind of wild, strange, chaotic energy about him, and personally, he really reminded me of the basketball player and actor Dennis Rodman from my childhood—not in the sense of a direct copy, but in terms of vibe: unpredictability, inner chaos. It’s actually interesting that the film doesn’t build the characters as direct copies of real basketball players. Rather, it’s a mix of archetypes, game references, and cultural allusions. Director Tyree Dillichay himself said that Will’s journey as an underrated player was largely inspired by the story of Steph Curry, who, by the way, also produced the animated film.

I already mentioned in the announcement that I really love what Sony has been doing with animation in recent years, and this case only confirms it.
They don’t just make things “smooth and realistic”; they assemble each frame so that it stands on its own as a visual spectacle. There are rich textures, pronounced graphic design, bold color schemes, energetic movement, and a sense that the screen is always buzzing with energy. Many reviews, by the way, try to directly compare GOAT to “Zootopia,” but that strikes me as a bit of a lazy move. Yes, both feature animals, social dynamics, and a world built around anthropomorphic characters. But that doesn’t mean one film is automatically a rip-off of the other. If you follow that logic, you could reduce half of the animation from recent years to “someone’s copy.” I think it’s simpler than that: stories like this are just easier to sell to both kids and adults through animals. It’s an accessible visual language that simultaneously allows for humor, simplifies the world, and doesn’t lose emotional clarity.

The cartoon works perfectly as family cinema. This is especially important to me: it’s one of those rare cases where a family cartoon actually holds your attention. My kids were absolutely thrilled, and for an hour and a half, this movie had them completely hooked. And to be honest, that sometimes says just as much about a cartoon as half the reviews do.

In short, if you love animation, classic sports storytelling, and movies that the whole family can watch without dismissing them as “just for kids,” then this is definitely worth watching.
