- Good afternoon, dear, have a seat. Tell me what's troubling you.
- Reality is merciless, Doctor. With its cruel paws it pulls us out of the womb into a blindingly deafening world, never loosening its grip until death. But as we grow up, we create a different reality for ourselves. A shell of illusion, where you can invent a convenient course of events. Where you can consider yourself an exemplary family man, a talented writer, a hopeful musician. And live a fictional image, a chimerical happiness. But every year the present squeezes this shell more and more tightly until the true begins to break through the cracks, destroying the constructed fantasies.
And once again we have to learn, like babies, to live by the rules of a new world, uncomfortable, indifferent. Sometimes, I think, there is no way to learn. And a person just breaks. He breaks so grotesquely that he becomes unreal.
That the tech support person who serves me can call strange women in the evenings and harass them. That my quiet neighbor, with her eyes droopy, can kill a man and put his body parts in the fridge next to the strawberry ice cream. That you, my psychologist, can, after a quiet family dinner, go out and rape your son's classmate.
There's a certain amount of irony in that, a wicked irony. Because all these people are trying to find happiness. And it looms before them all their lives like a mirage, an unattainable carrot. Wherever you turn, it's always ahead, always near, but you can't always reach it.
And even if the present reality miraculously gives you what you want, you may just not believe it. Push it away, keeping your illusory universe, with its fictional incentives, ideals and values. After all, we can no longer, like children, rejoice in coincidences, nor can we believe that the world is kind to us. No, enveloped in the black humor of existence, it laughs at us every day. And the only weapon against it is to laugh with it. There, there, Doctor.
