Following in his father's footsteps and hoping for a much-needed strengthening of his rather disparate family, an already grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms) decides to surprise his wife Debbie (Applegate) and two sons with an offer to travel across America to “America's favorite family vacation park,” Wally World.

User Review
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were initially invited only to adapt John Hughes' 1983 screenplay to modern realities, but then the producers and the studio decided to entrust the tandem to direct the picture as well
In the crudest approximation, all viewers can be divided into two categories - those who are jealous of what was done in the past, critically perceive remakes and reboots, and those who constantly crave the destruction of authority, overthrow legends and do not mind to mock the classics. “Vacation”, filmed under the direction of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, should bring together both - combining in itself a sequel, a remake (new characters almost verbatim repeat the path to vacation from ‘Vacation’ in 1983) and reboot (the picture is clearly intended as a new starting point for the franchise), the tape is designed to return us to the atmosphere of warm lampom, albeit with some barbs and vulgarities, humor of the eighties. Family vacation, uniting all, and the heroes, and the audience! “What could go wrong?” - as the tagline of the new picture says... Something could and did go wrong. All we have to do is watch the fall.
The main danger that befalls any kind of remake is a change of era. Not so much an external one, but an internal one, tied up in the relationships between people, in social and political contacts, in the level of freedom, morality and ethics. In the early 1980s, Vacation was a groundbreaking, daring work that broke the shackles of comedy and raised the bar of on-screen absurdity to the limit. Today, such a movie no longer looks fresh and original, overfed “Bachelor Party”, “Girls' NightOut” and other “We - Miller” viewers no longer buy into the dirty swearing from children's mouths, to lewd jokes or pelting feces from head to toe. To be in the vanguard, you need something stronger.
But here the authors of “Vacation” of the new generation have driven themselves into a trap - choosing for the picture adult rating, the writers and directors stalled somewhere on the border of a very gentle teen humor, the kind of humor from which an adult will only smirk, but thirteen-year-olds will roll with laughter. But even with a relatively simple humor authors clearly flawed - their new Grizvoldy turned from charming burdocks, in which Americans easily recognized themselves, in banal comedy characters, a concentration of stupidity, stamps and predictability. “Vacation” of the past was loved not for its ‘farts’ and ‘poop’ but for the warmth of relationships within one individual uneasy family, the Grizwalds of the '80s were not hard to love.
The new characters could well become audience favorites, Ed Helms and Christina Applegate - quite talented comedians and actors who can give “chemistry” to their screen characters, but the directors constantly make them look like fools, and quite unpleasant. In the map-telling scene, Healthmes is just as embarrassing as Applegate in her college adventures. If the writers wanted to tie the viewer to the characters with this, they chose a strange way to do it. It is hard at times to look at the boys, unlike the same “Millers”, this time the children really look “damaged”.
In the picture planned a place for the permanent hero of the franchise cousin Eddie, but the performer of the role of this character Randy Quaid during the filming period suddenly found himself behind bars because of a financial dispute at his place of residence in Canada, and the cameo had to be abandoned
Slightly sweetens the pill the second plan, where there was a place and the pillar of the franchise Chevy Chase, and homerically funny Chris Hemsworth, and frightening Norman Reedus, and joker Charlie Day, and a dozen actors of various caliber, scattered like beads throughout the film (especially the four cops on Four Corners). But, alas, as is often the case, the abundance of cameos in the background turned “Vacation” into a set of anecdotes, not always skillfully tied together. And tying them together with a good story didn't work. Of course, the plot of the original picture binds the old mortar and bricks of the new movie, and the old gags still work at times (goodbye, beauty in a sports car), but the integrity of “Vacation” is clearly lacking.

Let's be honest with ourselves, the previous sequels to 1983's “Vacation” not only failed to reach the heights of the original film, but also slipped into a “shameful” direct-on-video format. Against the backdrop of recent films, Goldstein and Daley's work is not hopeless, but is as far from one of the best comedies ever made by Harold Ramis and John Hughes as a trip to Paris is from a dubious mud bath on the side of the road in Arizona. However, who has a successful vacation every year? Let's hope the 21st century Grizwolds have better luck in Europe.
