Storyline
Sean Mercer (played by John Wayne) runs a business in East Africa. He and his team capture wild animals for zoos. It is dangerous work - one of his men almost dies after being gored by a rhino. He accepts a request from a photographer to join his business and capture their experiences but is very surprised, and bit inconvenienced, when the photographer turns out to be a woman. However, over time he grows fond of her. Meanwhile, plans to capture certain animals lead to all sorts of plans and adventures.

East Africa somewhere in the Tanganyika region. Here a group of brave hunters on wild and very wild animals under the leadership of a tough guy Sean Mercer (John Wayne), risking his life, supplies for European zoos rhinos, elephants and other gnu antelopes. And in the evening the company usually booze and after such a drink timed to the recovery of their wounded friend, Sean discovers in his bed a girl of model appearance. Word for word and it turned out that the madam with the nickname Dallas (Elsa Martinelli) arrived on assignment of the zoo management to conduct a photo shoot. Sean first shook up, well, and then, as usual, fell in love ...

Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn have already been in Africa (“African Queen”), then there were also visited by Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly (“Mogambo”), the same place with pathos to die sent Gregory Peck accompanied by Susan Hayward (“The Snows of Kilimanjaro”), and now in this colorful place brought and veteran Hollywood shop John Wayne. True, unlike the previous (and most of the already deceased, with the exception of Peck, as at the time of 1962) male stars, Wayne in companions prescribed far from stellar, but beautiful Elsa Martinelli, as well as not known in the expanses of America European actors - German Hardy Kruger, Frenchman Gerard Blain, etc. All of them were distinguished by their youth and the general lack of depth and schematic characters played. And, nevertheless, 55-year-old John Wayne, who in the movie with no one had to fight, shoot or just compete, looked against the background of this youngsters deserved, but dusty and outdated piece of furniture, which is unclear where they tried to attach in the picture. Especially ridiculous was the love line between Wayne and Martinelli, in which a girl with the appearance of a top model is sucking after an obese old man and does not know how to approach him.

The only thing in the movie that was really top notch was the camerawork. The wildlife hunting footage shot in the Serengeti Park is impressive. However, there is a “but” here as well. The movie initially began with a driving scene of chasing an aggressive rhinoceros. But then 2/3 of the timing of the already too long movie - two and a half hours! - will be taken up by this kind of footage from “In the World of Animals”. Yes, it is beautiful and spectacular, but we are still talking about a feature film. Definitely Howard Hawks - the author of such hits as “Sergeant York” and “Red River” (there just John Wayne played) to the early 60's lost his touch. And although Hawkes will still be making movies for some time, the Academy will not nominate his work for an Oscar. In any case, all good things have their time, and the good things for Hawkes ended back in the '40s.

Visually, the movie is beautiful, but it lacks a lot in plot meaningfulness and structure.
