A guy named Steve (Jack Black) dreamed of working in the mines since childhood, but on his way to happiness, he first encountered an aggressive miner, then a humiliating office job. At some point, Steve's passion for creativity took over, and he abandoned everything and rushed underground, where he discovered an artifact that opened a portal to the Overworld — a dimension where everything consists of cubic blocks and the possibilities for creation are limited only by the imagination. Years passed, Steve explored his domain far and wide, and suddenly stumbled upon another portal leading to the Nether — a world where pig-like monsters led by Malgosha (Rachel House), who hates creativity, mine gold. The villainous Malgosha craves Steve's artifact in order to enslave the Upper World and destroy all creativity.

The game Minecraft brings together representatives of different generations: from X to Alpha. Therefore, the film is family-friendly, and both children and parents are familiar with the game.

The characters are real people placed on a chroma key, backlit, which makes for a rather spectacular picture. I liked the beautiful 3D landscapes and many interesting buildings. You can see how much skill and effort has been put into the world. The film has many references to the game: there are creepers and endermen, square sheep and chickens. The characters can fly on wings, craft a sword, find diamonds, and treat themselves to a chicken in lava.

For the plot, Steve, a mob by origin, had to be a person stuck in the game in the film. A very adult person and more spherical than cubic.

The plot is not complicated: four people enter a cubic world through a portal, and now they have to complete a task and return back. I am surprised why a film about a computer “sandbox,” whose concept is to play, build, and explore without rules or restrictions, has a plot at all.

Steve (Jack Black), a local resident, told us his story of being a “miner.” When the players appeared, he took it upon himself to accompany them on their quest to “save the world.” The quest team was a motley crew. Henry (Sebastian Hansen) is a gifted schoolboy who has lost his parents, moved to a new school, and dreams of making friends. His sister Natalie (Emma Myers) is a very serious girl. Down (Daniel Brooks), a real estate agent in a tracksuit, doesn't show much of himself. They are joined by an “overly mature” gamer, an eternal boy, Garrett “Trashman” (Jason Momoa), who is a fan of the simplest games from the arcades of the 80s and doesn't know what Minecraft is. The character considers himself a cool guy and attracts all the attention. Garrett works in his retro shop selling all sorts of stuff.

The film is carried by the amusing duo of Garrett and Steve, in which there is a mixture of rivalry and silliness.

While watching, I wondered why people in the Minecraft world didn't recognize their game skins. There were players among the characters! Well, it's understandable that the character Garrett admitted he didn't play Minecraft. But what about the other characters?

Although the filmmakers did leave one real person with a skin, he simply lost his physical body. It's a pig with a crown, as a well-known American YouTuber explained to me.

The characters find themselves in situations that are presented to us as dangerous. As soon as they encounter a problem or an enemy, I didn't feel involved, because both the characters and the situation were being ridiculed. There is a lot of humor in the film, but it is specific: sometimes teenage, sometimes internet-based, meme-based, and sometimes somewhat primitive.

Of all the locations or biomes, the most interesting is the lava-filled “Lower World,” inhabited by brutal piglins. I was touched by the story of the villain Malgosia. She is a pig in depression, for whom creativity and the joy of self-expression at some point became impossible because of the stupid, insensitive piglins. Unlike Henry, who also faced bullying and misunderstanding from his classmates but still did not stray from his path, paid no attention, communicated with those who understood him, and crafted and created, Malgosha gave up. She blocked her resentment and anger, and now all she wants is gold. Upon learning of the opportunity to enter the upper world, she conceived a sinister plan.

The film has everything you need to have a good time with popcorn in your hand. I want to say to the most disappointed viewers and critics: “Maybe it's time to finally grow up?” You came to watch teenage adventures, find the “childhood” location on your personality map and watch from there, you will immediately like the film.

By the way, did they show us what happens to players whose skins are over 18 years old? They grow cubic hair, they start communicating with their eyebrows, and Jennifer Coolidge's character becomes interested in them.
