Storyline
Antoine and Christine Doinel are still in the honeymoon phase of their young marriage, there a playfulness in their interactions with each other as they live a somewhat bohemian life, he working for a florist in their neighborhood with his main job, which he carries out in their apartment building's courtyard, dying white flowers vivid colors, she a concert violinist and violin teacher. They also have cordial relations with idiosyncratic neighbors and other neighborhood regulars. Their union is not outwardly obvious in the differences in their background, Antoine who uses writing as a means to deal emotionally with what was his neglected childhood in a broken home, while Christine's family is bourgeois. When Christine becomes pregnant, Antoine goes on a search for a higher paying and more stable job, he, in part out of a misunderstanding, able to get one working for an American hydraulics company. It is through that job that Antoine meets and begins an affair with Kyoko, the daughter of a Japanese client. The affair may jeopardize the life he has with Christine - while it is arguably more a fling for Antoine in dealing with these changes, it is love for Kyoko.

User Review

Antoine Douanier (Leo), a young eccentric flower seller with the soul of an artist, is married to Christine (Jade), a music teacher. Everything is generally fine for them: they have a cozy apartment, no money problems, Antoine's new job at a reputable international firm, and the birth of their son Alphonse. In short, it's not life, it's a dream. But over time, the young Frenchman grows tired of quiet family life in a remote neighborhood, and Antoine begins an affair with a Japanese woman who has come to France for work.

François Truffaut, it seems, decided to conduct an extremely cynical experiment, forcing the young couple to experience, it seems, all the hardships of family life in just a couple of years of living together. It all starts with arguments about the child's name, then irregular, even rare sex, difficult working days, and infatuation with another person. Truffaut proved to be extremely distrustful of family values and therefore cleverly mocked the desire of many couples for a cloudless life, immediately confronting the “lovebirds” with numerous difficulties and adding a traditional melancholic French flavor to taste. Although to a greater extent the director still ridicules the main character's life aspirations and his psychology; Antoine himself does not understand what he wants from life: to grow flowers or become a famous writer, to stay with the faithful and caring Christine or the mysterious Japanese woman Kyoko, to live out the rest of his days in proud bachelor solitude or alongside his wife and beloved son.

Today, “Bed & Board” already signifies a problem that has become part of reality. Many couples do not live together for even ten years, after which they slam the door and go their separate ways in search of new experiences, unwilling to compromise. True, Truffaut, although he proved himself to be a great cynic, did not put an end to Antoine and Christine's separation in his film. Two years later, after going through all the hardships, they were able to reconsider their ideas about a perfect marriage. Antoine and Christine become like an elderly couple next door: the nervous husband, waiting for his wife, throws her coat and hat down the stairs, and she runs out into the hallway in a panic, saying that she is hurrying as fast as she can. The Duanels begin to do the same, and the neighbor's phrase sounds all the more comical: “Now they truly love each other.”
