After a nuclear disaster, people were divided into sexually "positive" and "negative." The negative ones cannot have sex; touching others only causes them pain, even though their desires have not disappeared. They can only come to the Flesh Cafe and watch sexual performances staged by the "positives" and mutants. One day, Lana, whom everyone considers "negative," ends up in this cafe.

User Review

“Café Flesh” (1982) is not just an exploitation film, but a unique fusion of sci-fi dystopia, art house and erotic performance art that leaves an aftertaste of both disgust and admiration. The action takes place in a radioactive future where nuclear war has divided humanity into “positives” (those who can have sex) and “negatives” (those who experience only pain). Most are negatives, and their only solace is a show at the Café Flesh club, where the positives turn intimacy into a public spectacle under the spotlight.

The central line is the tragedy of a young couple: he is the negative, she hides her positive nature. Their relationship collapses before their eyes: he cannot satisfy her and she is forced to perform on stage to survive. Director Stephen Sayadian (aka Rinse Dream) creates a world where sex is not a pleasure but a commodity, a performance for a crowd of outcasts. The performance scenes are pure surreal: from tango parodies to sadistic food and car acts, filmed in a manner reminiscent of early John Waters or even Buñuel, but with a porn budget.

Visually the picture is a godsend: black and white colors, theatrical scenery made of garbage, neon lighting and costumes that could pass for props from a punk club of the 80s. The soundtrack is a separate plus: experimental post-punk from the band Wall of Voodoo adds psychedelic charm to the picture. The actors (mostly porn stars like Michelle Bauer and Charles Grey) play to the limit, creating sometimes grotesque but vivid images.

Cons? Yes, there's a lot of nudity and some pretty graphic scenes - it's not for puritans or those expecting romance. But if you're a fan of cult thrash like “Liquid Sky” or “Thundercrack!”, then Café Flesh is your movie. It doesn't entertain in the usual sense, but provokes: it makes you think about voyeurism, capitalization of sex and human alienation. In the 4K remake, this dark aesthetic shines even brighter - a pure object for collectors of underground cinema. 8/10 for courage and style.
