Project A-Ko 4K 1986
Project A-ko is a frantic, hyperactive anime action film from 1986, where the world of school collides with a parody of superheroes and mecha. Schoolgirl A-ko possesses superhuman strength, but she doesn't realize it; her quiet friend C-ko and the obsessed rich girl B-ko drag her into an absurd feud where kidnappings, giant robots, and aliens become everyday occurrences. The film doesn't bother with deep drama, but races along to a loud soundtrack straight into visual chaos — bright, edgy, and insanely funny.

Project A-ko is not about the plot, but about the feeling: it's like they crammed a whole arcade, a classic mecha series, and a parody of all superheroes into one anime movie. A-ko is the typical “super-talent loser” who is the most honest about the whole conflict, but B-ko and her robots are pure, unadulterated sarcasm to anime tropes.
The animation is surprisingly lively even today: the fights are dynamic, the scenes of destruction work on the contrast of “nice school” and total chaos. The music is a mix of rock ‘n’ roll and 80s synth-pop that perfectly emphasizes the atmosphere of madness. The humor is naive in places, but it's honest and doesn't try to squeeze into a modern style - it's pure 80s, no excuses.
What does cut it a bit is the second half, where the alien storyline gets a bit heavy-handed, and the ending is obviously predictable. But overall, the movie never tries to seem like anything more than a “mega-fun anime action movie”.
If you're looking for something wooden and serious, this isn't the place. If you want an intense, crazy, but very self-contained retro anime where every scene is an explosion of color and energy, Project A-ko is definitely worth watching. The 4K release makes the picture look fresh and vibrant - details, colors and contrasts perfectly accentuate the animation, making it sound even louder.
