A future world shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow—whatever form it might take—is ruled not by the Matrix, but by the happy '60s, obsessed with car racing. Young race car driver Speedy (Hirsch) receives a tempting business offer from auto magnate Royalton, but remains loyal to his family, who own the independent design firm “Race Motors.” The enraged tycoon, who rigs race results—one of which killed Speedy’s older brother—wants to crush the family business. The young man accepts the challenge—he gets behind the wheel of the family’s “Mach 5” race car and steps on the gas.

After the not-so-life-affirming *The Matrix* and *V for Vendetta*, seeing a film like this from the brothers is—to put it bluntly—unexpected.

An absolutely charming and 100% family-friendly film. It’s got family values with all their moralizing quirks, a father-son relationship, and light comedy. The kids in the theater were thrilled, and I laughed my heart out too. What I want to point out right away is that none of the moral lessons here come across as cloyingly saccharine or out of place. Everything is strictly to the point, just deep enough, just superficial enough. It’s like reading a big A4-sized picture book for kids where all the text fits into three lines at the bottom of the page, yet it’s so full of itself and so preachy.

The visual style is gorgeous. Everything is coated in such a thick layer of caramel-colored graphics that at first you have to hold your jaw shut so it doesn’t drop. Acidic colors, neon everywhere, screaming and blaring combinations of the most unimaginable shades. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few new colors were accidentally invented during the film’s production. And yet, everything fits perfectly into the film’s overall concept.

Older viewers—especially those who follow the Brothers’ work even a little—will find plenty of interesting things for themselves, aside from the new experience, of course. First, the direction. Their signature style of static shots is unmistakable. And the staging of the brawls—not fights, but specifically brawls—which you can count on one hand, brings a nostalgic tear to your eye and recalls the magical feeling of the Matrix fights from the first viewing. Well, the Brothers haven’t been sitting still, and they do have a couple of new tricks up their sleeves—there’s no other way to describe this over-the-top racing action flick.

A few words about slow-mo. In 90% of movies, the reaction to it is usually:
- Ugh, slow-mo again =/

And although you can count the slow-mo scenes here on one hand, you can’t call them anything other than fantastic. It’s too hard to react to them with anything other than a stifled sigh of admiration. The Wachowskis know how to work wonders with it—no denying it.

As for the cast—everything is wonderful. Goodman, Sarandon, Ricci, Fox, and—why hide it—Hersh are all absolutely fantastic and perfectly cast. And the duo of the younger brother Speedy and the chimpanzee is easily the best comedy pair of the year, right up there with the Todd/Lovett duo.

To sum it up, I’ll say: an excellent family film with everything we love about the Brothers, plus a thick, thick layer of caramel-sweet visuals.
