Gérard Oury didn’t just make a comedy—he created the quintessential French farce, which has remained one of the highest-grossing French films in history for decades. Louis de Funès is unrestrained and brilliant here: his character, Piver, is a complete xenophobe whom life methodically places in situations that require him to respect those he has despised his entire life.
The film skillfully balances buffoonery with sharp social satire. Arabs, Jews, Catholics—no one is immune to Uri’s gentle irony, yet the mockery here is good-natured and unifying, not divisive. That is precisely why the film was nominated for a Golden Globe and continues to garner rave reviews from new generations of viewers to this day.
Chases, mistaken identities, the unforgettable scene at the gum factory—all of this comes together in a flawlessly calibrated comedy machine that hasn’t lost its momentum half a century later. A must-watch. 9/10
