Dark Shadows 4K 2012 Ultra HD 2160p
The owner of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas Collins, is wealthy, powerful, and reputed to be an incorrigible Casanova—until he makes a fateful mistake by breaking Angelique Bouchard’s heart. A witch in the literal sense of the word, she condemns him to a fate worse than death—turning him into a vampire and burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is accidentally freed from the crypt and finds himself in the vastly changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood and finds the once-majestic building in ruins. The pitiful descendants of his family are in little better shape than the ancestral home, and each of them has their own “skeletons in the closet.”

When I first heard about the movie ‘Dark Shadows’, it immediately became one of the projects I was most looking forward to. After all, I was expecting to see a dark, gothic fairy tale for adults in the vein of ‘Sleepy Hollow’... But after watching the trailer, my anticipation began to wane. My hopes were dashed by the film’s over-the-top comedic elements. But I went to see it anyway, because the Burton-Depp duo is always something interesting, or so I thought...
Tim Burton, as always, created a film of superb visual quality. The makeup, sets, ’70s-style aesthetic, and the director’s signature gothic atmosphere are beyond reproach, though they largely amount to Burton repeating himself. The gothic moments look great, but once the comedic ones kick in, ‘Dark Shadows’ turns into a farce. The jokes—which have been played out in many other films—don’t elicit a smile; rather, they overshadow the film’s strengths with their banality and predictability. The only jokes that stick in my mind are the one about the letter “M” and the ones involving Alice Cooper. Burton’s self-references might still be forgivable, but when, during a scene of intense passion between Johnny Depp and Eva Green, the director outright copies a scene from “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, you realize that Burton is in the midst of a creative crisis. ... The screenplay is a muddled story with clichéd, boring dialogue and a bunch of underdeveloped characters who are there solely to distract from the main protagonists. B Michelle PfeifferB , B Helena Bonham CarterB , and B Chloë MoretzB have wonderful characters that I’d love to learn more about and see more of on screen, but I didn’t get what I wanted. I have no complaints about Depp and Green. Johnny Depp is, as always, a charismatic “freak”, and Eva Green is “walking sex”. The ending turned out to be rushed and “far-fetched”. Somehow, the characters solved all their problems too quickly and illogically... On the plus side, I’d also mention the film’s soundtrack—’70s rock fit perfectly into the picture. And another thing: a 150-million budget? It’s time for Mr. Depp to lower his fee expectations, since his characters aren’t as charming as they used to be...
Overall, I can’t say I didn’t like the movie. ‘Dark Shadows’ is a decent film with its pros and cons. But from the Burton-Depp duo, you expect something more than just a soap opera adaptation for the big screen, which ends up being a showcase of two brilliant people repeating themselves... ‘Dark Shadows’ doesn’t make you want to watch it again, and in the case of Tim Burton’s films, that’s an extremely rare occurrence—one that speaks volumes and is also one of the main reasons for this negative review...
