A self-centered race car driver who’s had a dazzling career doesn’t care about anyone else’s interests; his only priority is winning the next race—and that’s pretty much all there is to it. With that kind of mindset, there’s no future—a fact Ricky comes to realize after a disastrous race. As expected, his journey will involve finding himself and moving away from his self-centered principles.

Yes, the plot isn’t particularly original; you can’t even say it’s a clever reworking of familiar clichés. But when watching a movie like this, you should already be in a certain frame of mind—one that’s all about a lighthearted and completely carefree way to pass the time.

Ricky Bobby: King of the Road is a film that’s at times silly, naive, and unrealistic—but it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.
