Half a century has passed since that era when the masters of the genre were searching for the perfect time and place, as if seeking the best perspective amid the chaos of opinions: how IT should be.

That was a time when Pierre Richard and Jane Birkin showed in *Don’t Lose Sight* that the time we devote to one another is far more valuable than the artificial attention invested in contrived reasons. Back then, in keeping with the genre, Claude Zidi joked that the world seemed to allow itself only five minutes for feelings.

Now, in *One Night*, time shifts its course slightly, though without replacing that same idea.

A Night That’s Worth a Year

In an alternate New York, there’s a law: premarital sex is legal for only one night a year. On this one night, single people all over the city desperately search for a partner. Owen (Callum Turner) and Ellie (Monica Barbaro) may not be the only ones in the metropolis, but they’re the ones through whom we realize that sometimes we’re looking in the wrong places. A series of misunderstandings, mistakes, and unexpected distractions constantly keeps them apart, turning the night into a thrilling chase through the city streets.

It’s like a dream: you run after someone, lose them, find them again, lose them once more. And every time it seems like all is lost, a new chance appears.

Will Gluck, now more experienced after three years since *Anyone But You*, directs this comedy with the same lightness, but with an added edge. And most importantly, he shows us that when two people can stop and realize that the heat isn’t about cooking faster, but about feeling the warmth—a special feeling is born. It’s as if a lighthouse you hadn’t noticed before suddenly appears—one you’d been searching for at night, rather than in the light of day.

A Dream That Time Can Be Rewritten

In *Don’t Lose Sight*, the characters were looking for a way to spend just one day together, despite the crazy circumstances. They ran, hid, made mistakes, but in the end, they found each other. Here, it’s the same story. Only instead of a day, they have a night. And instead of freedom of choice—a strict law that says: “You have only a few hours to find… Then there will be another year of waiting.”

But Glak laughs at this law, just as Zidi once laughed at the characters who tried to squeeze intimacy into five minutes. He shows that even when time is squeezed to the limit, what matters isn’t speed, but attention.

Don’t miss a single opportunity to see each other, hear each other, feel each other.

After all, when two people stop running, that very miracle happens—the one all romantic comedies talk about. But here it feels especially poignant, because they had to overcome not just awkwardness, but an entire night where every minute could have been their last.

That Lighthouse

The film reminds us that we often search for something in the dark, not realizing that the light is already on. We chase after an idea, a fantasy, an illusion, when what we really need is simply warmth—which can only be felt when you stop being afraid of making mistakes and just allow yourself to be.

“One Night Only” is a dream about how time isn’t linear. It can contract and expand when there’s someone nearby with whom you want to share it.
