Did A (Delphine Seyrig) and X (Giorgio Albertazzi) meet last summer in Marienbad? X claims that they did, and tries to convince A. His companion is almost convinced that they did, but only the statue under which they met again (or for the first time?) this summer in Marienbad knows the truth. In a strange castle in the resort of Marienbad, strange people play strange games...

User Review
She is asleep, and in her dream she is walking down endless corridors, with some people flickering around her. There is no depth or sharpness in them. They are just mannequins, background, decoration. They say something, but their words merge into unintelligible noise. And only one man persistently haunts her, trying to make her remember something. He annoyingly breaks the cozy calm of the frozen world. Doesn't he realize that nothing could have happened last year in Marienbad - after all, she was never there. But his words have planted a seed of doubt, and now the dream is slowly beginning to turn into a nightmare. Could it be that her memory is hiding the past from her? Trying to solve the riddle, her brain replayed the same scenario over and over again, but with each round it only gets more and more confused. Reality falls into itself, leaving no way out and no answer.

It happened a year ago, but every time he dreams he sees her. Why is she so cold and unapproachable, doesn't she remember? Again and again he approaches her and tells her that they met last year in Marienbad, Fredericksburg, it doesn't matter where. What matters is that they fell in love, and agreed to meet again. Or was it just a dream? You can't tell now, that's why it's so important that she remembers. That would be the guiding thread to follow to get out of this maze of mirrors, corridors, images and words. Nothing else in the world mattered.

Purgatory is the place where, passing round and round, sinful souls strive for paradise, purifying themselves and washing away everything that does not let them go further. However, many fail to reach the end, getting lost in this strange labyrinth where everything is so shaky and unclear. Even objects here do not cast shadows. There is no memory, no meaning, nothing. Why, then, does he ask her so insistently to remember their love? Maybe he's Orpheus trying to save his Eurydice. Or maybe he's just another soul trying to atone for his sin. Repeating events, figures that move in circles over and over again. An endless game in which the winner is predetermined. The illusion of life. To get out of it, all you have to do is remember, but that's the hardest thing for a lost soul to do.

Alain Resnais and Alain Rob-Grillet in this movie made a journey into the world of the unconscious, the unknowable. Surrealists and existentialists alike consider “Marienbad” to be their own, some see in it the images of Paul Delvaux, others see it as a blend of dream and reality, and still others see echoes of either “The Myth of Sisyphus” or “The Castle”. In fact, there is some truth in each interpretation. And at the same time, none of them fully reflects the essence of what is happening in this hypnotic movie. The search for pure art led Malevich to create “Black Square” and the two Alaines to “Marienbad”. The crude primitivism of the former and the pretentious baroque nature of the latter is really just a visual technique, which in both cases leads to the complete destruction of classical perception. Any attempt at logical cognition sooner or later stumbles on a stumbling block, and even the authors themselves cannot reach a unified opinion about their movie.

The infinity of interpretations leads to the absence of a single, correct one. The movie spins in an intricate dance, repeating figures, confusing and entangling, it crushes in countless mirrors, creating a reflection of reflection, contradicts itself, logic and common sense. According to Alain Resnais, he is still an extremely crude and primitive, but still an attempt to depict on film the process of thinking. It is an endless dream of the mind, a cipher to which there is no key, a search for a black cat in a dark room, in a word - a universal emptiness, the exit from which can only be the answer to one question: did something happen last year in Marienbad?
