The 70s of the XX century. The golden age of Formula 1: streamlined forms of racing cars, brutal on the track and vulnerable in ordinary life racers, sexy fans, liters of champagne at the finish line for the winner... Two irreconcilable rivals in the history of racing - charming playboy-Anglo-American James Hunt and disciplined perfectionist-Austrian Niki Lauda - bring themselves to the limit of physical and psychological endurance for the sake of triumph on the track. For them there are no easy paths to victory and no margin for error. A single slip-up can cost drivers their careers and even their lives.

Mid-70s. In the race “Formula 1” came together two irreconcilable rivals - the British JamesHunt(Chris Hemsworth) and Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). Since long ago, their competition on the race track has been fierce, but it was not until 1976 that fate decreed that both drivers had equivalent cars. In a level playing field, new character traits have to be displayed in order to emerge victorious. Once the race has started, there is no turning back. There will be only one winner.

The real movie about “Formula 1” was very lacking. There are, of course, and classic pictures, and stories about American body racing, even very close to the formula, but nafantasized to a greater extent “The Racer” with Stallone is. But the real thoughtful movie about the “queen of motorsports” was not. Why? Obviously, because the formulaic world is extremely multifaceted - even the world championship is stretched over two dozen stages, and confrontations between racers stretch sometimes for three to five years. At the same time, intrigues arise within teams and between “stables”.

It is all insanely interesting, full of amazing collisions, exciting confrontations and beautiful victories, but absolutely unscreened. None of the audience, not involved in the subtleties of pit stops tactics, a series of Grand Prix or qualifying races, will not want to waste time in the movie theater or TV on the endless tables of results, where the winner and loser are separated by fractions of seconds.

Ron Howard has gone the other way - he has isolated one single personal confrontation from the whole history of motor racing. Moreover, in this confrontation he singled out one season, and in a season - only two races. Key, no doubt, but sharply narrowing the view. And therefore the action breaks out of the closed ring of the race track and covers the personal lives of rivals.

I must say that Howard has chosen the perfect characters - the 70s were the heyday of Formula 1. The racers were much closer to rock stars or actors of the first magnitude than to athletes, day and night in gyms.

Hunt epitomized a generation of pilots living in a constant search for the line between speed and death. Not surprisingly, this era was accompanied by many deaths - madmen were as unstoppable as they were fragile. Lauda, on the other hand, heralded an academic approach to racing, continued by Alain Prost and Mika Hakkinen. It was Lauda who contrasted excitement with cold calculation.

On this confrontation and builds the picture - a playboy and hustler, changing women like gloves, living every day as the last and ready at any moment to take the challenge James Hunt against calculating, pedantic, cold Niki Lauda, who prefers stability in his personal life and in the race fight. The fate of both gives an opportunity to look at themselves from the outside - Howard twists the heroes Hemsworth and Bruhl so that the viewer until the very finale can not decide for which of the characters to worry. And in this picture reminds the race itself - the leader changes from lap to lap, but each of the pilots keeps the chance to win until the finish flag.

In the career of director Ron Howard there were many movies that set him apart from other directors. These include “Apollo 13”, “Mind Games”, and “Frost vs. Nixon”. Is “Race” worthy of joining that ranks? I think so. There is an inner nerve in the picture, there are brilliant characters, there are tough questions and equally tough answers to them. Finally, there are incredibly beautiful scenes of races - not only in those times bolides really looked like some blob of energy that came from another world, but also incredibly “tasty” shown the races themselves. Even a bit of a pity that since the terrible accident Lauda, since the death of Gilles Villeneuve and Ayrton Senna “Formula” so “combed” that even the departure from the track is considered today almost phenomenal event. “The Race” among other things is a movie about how the Road Gods began their journey down to Earth. They are still gods, but their wings have been trimmed quite a bit. Right or wrong, it's up to the viewer to decide. The race ends, but the race continues.
