A great drama directed by Oliver Stone is a common thing, but from his entire filmography 'Born on the Fourth of July' is one of the most interesting films, on a par with 'Platoon'. And if in the first movie with Charlie Sheen in the title role, the author told about the war in Vietnam, then in the picture with Tom Cruise about its consequences. Or rather, about the fact that any war - it makes no sense and total evil, but even more terrible is what remains after it and how the lives of those who until the very last moment are not afraid and ready to sacrifice themselves to save millions of other people are broken. Of course, 'Born on the Fourth of July' is not devoid of ubiquitous American patriotism, and some of the main characters' speeches will seem extremely trite, especially so many years after the movie's premiere.
But Ron Kovick's script, which is exactly what we're talking about here, was good enough, and director Stone as always masterfully played on the audience's feelings. And not least thanks to the talent of Tom Cruise, who as a young man, very authentically performed a Vietnam War veteran confined to a wheelchair. He has long ago proved that he can play anyone, just for the 80's such a movie like this, for his star role would seem a very strange choice. Especially after the successful 'Top Gun' and 'The Color of Money', in which he had the image of the 'star boy', as he was long called before the much more serious works of the 90s.
'Born on the Fourth of July', given its modest budget and almost total lack of action, was a fiercely interesting and relevant movie, especially for its time. And it's staged in such a way that it probably wouldn't be a shame to show it to Vietnam War veterans, many of whom couldn't find their place when they returned to civilian life. This was especially true for those who suffered the most severe injuries and remained disabled for the rest of their lives. But at the same time, they did not lose their fortitude and decided to devote the rest of their time to fighting injustice and the very politics that lead to the unleashing of new military conflicts.
Of the 145 minutes of screen time of such a serious picture, most of it is given to the performer of the main role, and Tom Cruise just brilliantly managed to show both despair and indomitable will to live. In some places even his character causes a smile with his somewhat 'explosive' character, because of which he sometimes overestimates his strength, but he quickly comes to himself and manages to keep his composure. Just for a moment imagine yourself in the place of Ron Kovik, and you will realize how difficult it is to play such a hero, especially a Hollywood actor, which the audience is used to seeing in a completely different role. Well, as a biographical war drama, 'Born on the Fourth of July' is one of the best examples of the genre.
In my opinion - a great drama by Oliver Stone with one of the strongest roles of Tom Cruise.
