Retired elite SWAT training specialist L.T. Bonham joins an FBI team on the trail of a brutal killer. The elusive killer, a masterful wielder of the combat knife, is one of L.T.'s most gifted students. He doesn't need a home - he feels invulnerable in the woods. He doesn't need money - he can get everything he needs to live on his own. He doesn't need a weapon - in his hands a stick or a stone is scarier than a machine gun. He is the perfect warrior, and only the one who taught a cold-blooded criminal the skill of killing “quickly, accurately and efficiently”, will be able to stop the hunter of people ...

Not only that, but the average action movie stays in the top ten of the American top list for quite natural reasons. It's very good for Americans now, under the war. Look, guys, in a simple and accessible form at the same time with entertainment, what will happen after the war. It's useful. If it weren't for one “but”.
“It's not America, Massa Dick, it's us.” Whoever bought “The Hunted” for us, the Voronjeslobodsky, Ryazan, Kazan, Lyuberetsky and Solntsevsky, should be kicked in the ears. With all the hatred for censorship and giggling at the trials of all Sorokin-Limonovs, with the decisive impossibility of any “Coming Together” in this case, you have to stand with your chest at the entrance to the cinema hall, so that the gang does not get there. You want to sleep well - protect yourself from the gang preventively. The film is extremely, demonstrably harmful to the youth of uncivilized countries.
On the virgin snow of the winter northern states a white wolf runs with difficulty, leaving bloody traces with his right front paw, broken by a wire snare. Tommy Lee Jones, who serves as a tracker, runs after him with ease and beauty. He catches him, catches him, skillfully removes the wire, releases him, and in the saloon beats the face of the man who set the snares in the protected area. The metaphor is transparent, but the same white wolf is Benicio Del Toro in the southern states, running over in camouflage through a green forest where two assholes are hunting deer. So much for hunting....
What's left of these two and a few other wildlife shooting enthusiasts of the fat bourgeoisie after Del Toro intervenes with one humble cleaver is off the table. But, long story short, pretty soon peaceful tracker Tommy Lee is called in to catch bloody maniac Benicio. Both of them are former FBI officers, only the first once taught the second to kill with bare hands and cover his tracks, though he never used his skills in his life, and the second learned and used them well as part of the state “peacekeepers” in the former Yugoslavia, after which he went crazy. All the movie, as it is supposed to action movies - a chase through cities and towns with visits to the past, to anti-war pathos and even to the biblical sense, which, of course, is vulgar, but in action movies is inevitable.
So, as a genre, everything is done very interestingly. Special effects in urban landscapes are already a little boring, and Friedkin easily trumps what he knows how to do - life in the forest, sticky leaves, fresh air. That doesn't cancel the chases in Fords and Mercs and trailers down the highway, nor does it cancel the computers, but it puts them in their place. The real world is bigger: with waterfalls and dens and driftwood and snow. In these conditions and people, men are somehow full-blooded, cooler, not pure walkers from computer games. In detail, that is very cinematic, convincingly filmed, how Tommy Lee immediately found Benicio, how Benicio made guards in the trailer, there is one more - the coolest - scene with making knives. One forged a sword out of handy junk at a coastal junkyard in a minute, another fashioned a parallel razor blade out of a nibbled tibia, and not a single stage is missed. Due to the lack of omission, with all the conventions of such a procedure, you believe that the men know their business, they are their own in the world, so the light is natural. Just as naturally, with ugly blood, they then fight. They have something to fight for, by psychology everything is clear, although pedaled. All in all, you don't have to be a round idiot to watch The Hunted.
Alas, there's one scene in the middle that can't be cut. And the fact that it's no less natural is the whole horror and urgency of the ban. Tommy Lee once taught, I repeat, SWAT teams how to kill - correctly and reliably. Like stab right side to side - liver, bottom to center - heart and finish at the neck where the carotid artery is. The knife should be short, wide, with a serrated blade at the end. And it is all shown, the instruction was visual to the point of impossibility, long and detailed. And, in the end, it turns out that Benicio del Toro, who followed the instructions, is also a man, even pathos, a “driven” man, acting on the principle of “it's not my fault, he came himself”.
Imagine that the gang is not watching the pathos of the post-war “The Hunted” or the biblical thrust, it is not an old pro, not a humanist and not a tough guy William Friedkin. She's a gangster sitting around learning where to hit. Getting high off the blood, memorizing it. What the hell do we need more statistics on unmotivated murders and group sadism? And here it's just a direct hit... No, no, you can't.
