What can you say about this movie? A movie with ¾ of its running time spent driving heavy trucks on the dusty roads of the southern United States, from point A to point B? Upon closer inspection, it turns out to be not so little. It is strikingly different from many movies, where the plot is based on “steel horses”. Here you will not see chases at crazy speeds, forced engines, and an army of girls in bikinis (although there is one). This movie is not so much about cars (not in reproach to “Fast and Furious” will be said), but about the people sitting in them, behind the “steering wheel”.
On the background of banal movement of a column of powerful American trucks, a multifaceted plot about the life of ordinary American workers and America in the late 70's as a whole develops. Here there is a confrontation between chauffeurs and cops, which eventually turned into a protest against the system. There is also a slight hint of political intrigue, when the emerged protest tries to “ride” the governor of one of the states for electoral purposes. The theme of continued racial inequality in American society is touched upon, especially pronounced in the south of the USA, on the example of a black trucker who became a victim of police brutality. There is also a romantic line in the relationship between the protagonist and a random hitchhiker. Well, and closer to the final movie, all of the above described, goes into a road movie with chases, with ambushes on the roads, with ramming police cars and shooting from a tank machine gun.
This movie is an excellent example of Hollywood dream factory of those times, when movies except for beautiful pictures, special effects and actors with perfect forms, had a socially significant plot, without falling under the term “movies are not for everyone”.
