After the death of the Pope, a secret group of cardinals is faced with the choice of a new head of the Catholic Church. The members of the council weave intrigues, plot against each other and learn about the late pontiff's secret, which threatens to destroy the world they are used to, isolated from the rest of society.

It's a classy movie. Probably not for everyone. But if you've ever been interested in this subject - you can't think of a better source of information.

The synopsis and trailer don't quite match reality. They promise a detective and almost a thriller, but it is not so. If only elements of them are present, but in general I would call the movie a chamber drama, which scrupulously and thoroughly describes the conclave - the process of choosing the head of the Catholic Church - the Pope. The process is ancient and very complicated. And therefore insanely exciting.

All these vigils of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, reverently waiting for the white smoke to come out of the chimney - a symbol that the cardinals have chosen a new hierarch, always seemed solemn and mystical to me. And I was glad to get to know him better.

We see the whole process of the conclave - from the arrival of the cardinals to the announcement of the cherished name - through the eyes of its organizer, Dean Lawrence. There are a lot of small but interesting details - from the menu of cardinal meals to what dye is used to achieve the black smoke that signifies that the clergy have not yet reached a consensus. Lots of entertaining Vatican 'cuisine' and power struggles. The war for the Holy See is very serious and the methods are more often than not contrary to the precepts of the Gospel. Each contender has his supporters and detractors, votes are bought, and various tricks and subterfuges are used. On the new hierarch depends on what way the Catholic Church will develop in the next years or decades. And so the importance of making the right decision can hardly be overemphasized.

Two hours of watching this fascinating action flew by unnoticed. The main characters, Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, are ratchet. I forgot that they are actors, not cardinals.

I already want to see the movie again and look at the little details.
