1781. Antonio Salieri is doing well as court composer to Emperor Joseph II. When Mozart appears at court, Salieri is horrified to discover that the divine musical gift he longs to possess has been given to some obscene, mischievous jester. Blinded by envy, he plots to destroy Mozart by all means....

History memorizes names, events, tragedies, illnesses.... History loses facts, to the point that a single coin found in one place is enough to confirm the opinion that the place is 1000 years old. The story of Salieri and Mozart was doomed, to form false versions and bold versions, thanks to Hollywood, ie, sorry, thanks to the best friend of schoolchildren 5-7 grades, AS Pushkin, history has turned them into enemies.

They were not enemies, they even wrote music together (Wikipedia will help you), but history benefits from contrasting two unique personalities of the same era, especially of such a scale as Mozart, especially when Pushkin himself invented him an envious and secret enemy, especially when the mystery shrouds Mozart's death. Well, there were no those who could establish the causes of death and keep the medical report, and in Vienna there was little land to spend on an individual grave for each great composer.

And then came Milos Forman. Decided to direct a movie about Mozart and Salieri, decided not to write the title “based on true events”, decided and won the director's Oscar. Again. Did not deceive the viewer, like the recent “18-14”, where also the historical background of the times and days of the father of the feud between Mozart and Salieri A. S. Pushkin in the lyceum. It is impossible to compare “18-14” with “Amadeus”, of course, especially “18-14” I did not watch and will not, but “Amadeus” finally succeeded.

Moreover, the director's version, and it goes for 3 hours, about 20 minutes longer than the theatrical one, it seems cruel to watch a 3-hour epic without battles and searching for different rings. However, Forman confronts two minds, and the weapons they give them musical works, not for nothing the soundtrack is one of the strongest sides of the movie. And human confrontation was not enough for Forman, he contrasts an insignificant man and God, you know, Mozart is a talent from God, he was called so in his childhood.

How could he know that in his life he would meet another strong composer Salieri, and if he knew how their fates would be intertwined by Hollywood, well, i.e. Pushkin, he would not be engaged in music, he would go to artists, or even to kings-emperors. Emperor of Austria in the film in general is a colorful addition to the plot and scenery (not for nothing the scenery is one of the strongest aspects of the film). Joseph II liked to spend his time in the theater, so Geoffrey Jones created such a funny character, which in the course of the film does not have numerous and lengthy scenes, still remains in the memory.

Certainly not like the movie's Salieri and Mozart, F. Murray Abraham (what does F stand for?) and Tom Hulse respectively. Such vivid acting from both of them is simply amazing, the serious and sly Salieri gets a great addition in the form of light-hearted and fun Mozart, but Mozart's character and state of mind changes over the course of the movie, and Hulse easily picks up on these trends, which he demonstrates on screen. Not for nothing the acting, one of the strongest sides of the movie.

True Forman, having built his movie around Salieri's secret envy and hatred of Mozart, does not forget to fuel intrigue and guile, successfully cutting out with scissors, unnecessary preparations for operas and conversations in the frame. He intrigues the viewer, immediately showing the completion of Mozart's work on the next operas, Salieri's big plan and further acting Abraham, who independently portrays the state of mind of his hero. Yes, so that it is easy to understand that here Salieri sits in his box admires Mozart, but to admit it is afraid, and immediately Abraham's sly eyes testify that this vow must be realized.

He swore repeatedly over the course of the movie, asking God to make him a musician, and God heard him, taking Salieri's father. Swore to God that his music would always be for God, that he would be a faithful servant and all that. Until Mozart came, and thus provoked Salieri's enmity with God, the burning of the cross, and the vow to kill Mozart's divine music. The further Salieri Forman went, the worse it got for Forman's Mozart, Salieri might have calmed down, but Mozart's “Requiem” made him admit through his teeth that Mozart was the best of the best....

However, envious in movies and in literature, in life Salieri was a composer no worse, the mere fact that he was the court composer of the Emperor sincerely loving classical music, this confirms it, but here is the trouble Salieri, that history has made his name synonymous with the word envious. You wouldn't wish your enemy to leave your name in the ages like that.

Forman did not make a biopic, Forman made a great movie that does not let the viewer yawn more than 1-3 times in 3 hours, still we must admit that the direction is the strongest side of the movie.
