Michael Mann is one of the best directors out there, with his own unique cinematic touch. All movie buffs familiar with his work know that Mann does at least two things in his movies at the highest level: gunfights and gunshot sounds. If a gunshot in a movie rumbles so loud that your ears pop, you know that Mann is the director of that movie. The film “Thief” - the debut work of this master, in which you can already see the rudiments of this style and characteristic for Michael directorial techniques.
Night drive on the freeway, lengthy dialog in a cafe, fierce gunfights and criminal plot - all of these are some of the hallmarks of Mann's style, and here they are present in full force. Frank, the protagonist of the film, specializes in stealing diamonds and cash, and one day he is hired by a very powerful mafioso. At first, their cooperation bears fruit: the boss helps Frank to adopt a child, gives him a lot of money and everything like that. But, alas, not everything happens as desired. And soon Frank will have to decide what is best for him.
James Caan and James Belushi played though not the most outstanding roles in their careers, nevertheless, did not hit the dirt. Each image of these guys is very clear and elaborate, especially in this regard, Kaan was lucky. A very unconventional personality. He seems to communicate with the most dangerous people in the city, behaves rudely, but nevertheless, is a very honest person and tells everything to his girlfriend. I was especially impressed by the episode when Frank realized that they are in danger and then he drives his girlfriend away so that she is not in danger. A worthy act for such a man.
Technically, the movie is excellent. And the eye is not confused by the date of the movie - 1981. The direction in the movie is superb, and the action scenes are simply masterpiece for that time. The blood, the sounds of gunshots, the camerawork - it's just a must-see. Of course, the picture quality leaves much to be desired, as the movie is old, but still, when the movie unfolds at full speed, it looks completely different. The music in the movie is no less good. Specific melodies, inherent only in the 80s, are instantly memorable. I was especially impressed by the music playing in the final episode, when Frank crushes the supostats with a gun. A perfectly fitting tune to the event on screen.
Thief is a wonderful crime thriller with a number of some plot lapses in the form of incomplete secondary storylines and a couple of drawn out episodes. Otherwise, it's an exemplary movie of the genre. Especially if you remember the year of release.
