This is a masterfully written drama of the life of the musical world. The French director pays homage to the great black musicians who lived and performed in Paris in the late '50s. The film, which cost $3 million, is dedicated to jazz geniuses Bud Powell (Bud Powell) and Lester Young (Lester Young), who became the prototype of the central character. Together with his American co-screenwriter David Rayfil, Tavernier skillfully placed the themes of cultural roots, spiritual kinship and contradictions at the heart of the story (based on fragments of biographies of Francis Paudras and Bud Powell). The film tells the dramatic story of a friendship between an aging jazz saxophonist who accepts a job at the legendary Blue Note Club in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and a passionate young French fan willing to make personal sacrifices to help his idol. In the title role, Tavernier cast a non-professional actor, Dexter Gordon, a 63-year-old jazz veteran whom the director has admired all his life. With his hoarseness, somewhat uncertain diction and inimitable plasticity, Gordon fills the image of an artist tired of the world with his own impish warmth. For the eyes the picture is no less a treat than for the ear. It was filmed entirely in the Epinet studio in northern Paris amid sets made by Alexandre Trauner, a veteran painter.
Academy Award for Best Musical (Herbie Hancock). Best Actor nomination (Dexter Gordon). Cesar Awards for sound and music.

User Review
A sad and heartfelt movie about jazz and two lost souls who are bound together by an enticing and fierce passion for music. This magic is immediately infused into the soul, and no wonder, because the frame is full of legends. There is Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Higgins, John McLaughlin and Ron Carter, just to name a few. And Bertrand Tavernier is not the last man in the movie industry, and, judging by the result, he is not indifferent to jazz. The film in its structure is undoubtedly simple, chamber, and in some places deliberately theatrical, especially in terms of Paris scenery (the whole business here takes place mostly in hotel rooms or the famous Blue Note jazz club). The plot here is more of a backdrop for the magical and immersive music, music, music. Of the movie actors, young François Cluzet is good, and you can see Philippe Noiret and Martin Scorsese in a small role. People far from music, perhaps, the tape will seem boring and far-fetched (musical numbers here prevail over the general plot), which is not without reason. After all, without a passion for music to feel the nerve will be difficult. And fans of the aforementioned musicians will be in for a real treat and a real paradise. A beautiful movie, enveloping and taking the soul.
