User Review
This movie stands out from most of the classic Clint Eastwood westerns. The main events here are not tied to a separate, lost among the prairies town, but cover vast territories. Although, there are certain plot similarities with the cult picture Good, Bad Evil, unlike Sergio Leone's western, there is no place for the search of untold treasures, adventures with a smile on your face. This is more of a war drama, a story about outcasts united by one desire to survive, to find their place in life. At the same time, it is not a heavy, hopeless narrative about life and death - there is humor, love, and other romanticized attributes.
The events of the movie develop against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Fratricidal violence, looting, impunity. Eastwood's character, whose family was taken away by scoundrels, defends, as it seems to him, a just cause and in the plot of the movie acts as a kind of court for traitors and murderers, rapists and invaders. So the social subtext in the movie pops up surprisingly often, even the theme of oppression of the indigenous population is touched upon. At the same time, the protagonist cannot be called a positive character. He, traditionally for Eastwood's roles, is rude and lacks courtesy, he takes the lives of dozens of people, albeit on business. That's why it is necessary to evaluate what is happening with the understanding that we are still far from a historical film.
The picture bribes with a large concentration of events on a fraction of screen time, and a variety of them. Military actions, numerous escapes from chases, scuffles inside the premises, river crossing, dialog with the local tribe. Although in general the plot of the movie can not be called exceptionally interesting, two hours of time pass quite quickly. In the end, a pleasant impression remains, especially if you are a fan of the work of the most recognizable cowboy of our time.
