16-year-old Genevieve and 20-year-old Guy are very much in love. Her kind mother, who runs an umbrella shop, won't hear of her marrying, particularly as Guy has yet to complete his compulsory military service. Genevieve is heartbroken when he leaves for his army service in colonial Algeria and is upset to have received only one letter from him in two months. Her mother's solution to this situation is kind diamond-merchant Roland Cassard, who has helped them in the past.

User Review

It's been 44 years since The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was released. There is still an umbrella store on the Rue de Port in Cherbourg. And Legrand's “Guy S 'en Va” is still one of the highest rated and most requested tunes among cell phone owners... Dry statistics and indifferent words alone make no sense in a review of “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.”
I have absolutely no idea what can be said about a movie film that overnight conquered the public with sincere soulful simplicity and became an evil genius for Jacques Demy, who after 1964 failed to repeat his success. In “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” so much worthy of attention, so many important and beautiful, and confessing feelings is always so difficult ...
God, how ingenuous and uncomplicated is what Jacques Demy once said?! How elementary and ingenious at the same time?! How fabulous and true?! The director joined together different, opposite details, elements, links, as human hearts are joined, and created a unique, unimaginable picture, saturated with that eternal simple, earthly beauty, which will one day save the world. Demy added a tragic, sacrificial love story that makes us realize how sublime and unsuitable for everyday life real feelings are, and Legrand added a melody that allows us to truly understand what it is to communicate through music.
And let “love dies only in the movies,” let the written script is uncomplicated, let the dramatic acting is replaced by music, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” will forever remain in the hearts of an enthusiastic audience. Picture Demy will always be that memorable painkiller, which together with the spectator's tears empties the soul of sorrow. And all because the tape of the 64th year leaves behind the most sublime and pure, memorizing every frame, starting with the credits and ending with a vital, catastrophic end, after which you want to shout: “This should not be!” - and repeat: “Do not watch me go. Close your eyes.”
“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is happiness in delicate colors, it is tears with the scent of women's perfume, it is the tragedy of deceived hearts, it is the insignificance of one life in comparison with love. It is the ingenious melody of Michel Legrand, it is the talented young performance of Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo, it is the straightforward skill of Jacques Demy, it is the exquisite taste of Jean Rabier. It is a picture that can compete on equal terms with Romeo and Juliet.
