Storyline
William Lee, an American expat and heroin addict in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community he lives in. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, an expat former soldier, makes him believe it might finally be possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.

User Review

Queer. A film adaptation of Burroughs' book. The story of an abusive and toxic homosexual relationship between a mature writer and a young journalist. If you mix the lyricism of “Lonely Man,” the trip of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” the passion of “Nine and a Half Weeks,” add Anderson's style with Lynch's atmosphere, and then season it with tracks by Nirvana, New Order, and Reznor's music, you might end up with something like this. Guadagnino has managed to create a compelling, yet at times repulsive picture. Craig throws the viewer into the flames, turning himself inside out, embodying passion and recklessness, while Starkey douses him with ice water, displaying a careless, cold detachment.

The film touches on virtually the entire spectrum of emotions that a person can experience in a relationship: attraction, passion, torment, weakness, despair. Lee, trying to get rid of the loneliness that frightens and overwhelms him, uses opium and alcohol on the one hand, and Allerton, who is the center of attention of men and women, is tired of his popularity, desires freedom, and does not shy away from loneliness. This is a case of an extrovert desiring an introvert. They are different in temperament and emotional state. One is an adult, but essentially an immature emotional teenager, the other is a balanced and composed young man. One loves, the other allows himself to be loved.

A fairly candid work that reveals not so much the bodies as the feelings of the characters. One of Craig's best and most unexpected dramatic roles for me. Allerton is also good in this film. So far, it has made a greater impression on me than last year's festival films.
