Nuclear weapons are stolen from a Russian train... The first long-awaited film from DreamWorks is a dark but thrilling thriller, somewhat reminiscent of the Bond films. The terrible reality of the former Yugoslavia, corrupt Russia. A member of the Bosnian parliament is killed, and nine nuclear warheads intended for destruction are stolen from a train. The tenth explodes, showering the USSR and Europe with fallout, which does not prevent the heroes from fighting the villains in the same area. Dr. Julia Kelly (Kidman) and Lieutenant Thomas Devoe (Clooney), who has personal contacts in the former evil empire, are the ones looking for the bombs... In today's world, there can no longer be someone else's grief and someone else's pain. This top-notch action flick, based on our reality, with a pretty smart, yet simple idea, will be one of those movies that people always want to see.

User Review

I was already getting ready to go to bed when I caught the beginning of this film, but the presence of Russian officers in the film (played by Russian actors Alexander Baluyev and Peskov) caught my interest, as I have always been curious, to be honest, about Hollywood films whose plots are connected with Russia and Russians. The role of the Russian “corrupt” general went to Baluyev, which spared us the shameful “clumsy” pronunciation of Russian that is clearly evident among American actors.

The plot of the film seems simple: another theft of nuclear weapons with the aim of using them for a terrorist attack against the civilian population and the attempts of a US officer (George Clooney) and his partner (Nicole Kidman) to prevent this evil deed, but... the dramatic storyline with Serbian Dusan Gavrich (Marcel Jures) leaves you with completely different thoughts and impressions during and after viewing than an “ordinary” action movie would. The film is based on real events, and even historically real ones, I would say. We all remember (those who know, of course; those who don't, I advise you to find out) the fate of Eastern Europe and its states after the collapse of the USSR, what ordinary people had to go through... One of them (Dušan Gavrić) tries to smuggle one of the warheads into a country whose people are far removed from everything that is happening on another continent — into the United States of America — so that they feel that this is their war too, so that it becomes their war. He walks down the streets of New York and sees people just like him, happy, innocent...

Of course, not all Russians who have seen the film like the way some Russian characters are portrayed, but to be honest, this is the case in many foreign films, especially those from the 1990s. In the minds of American directors, a RUSSIAN is either a villainous officer, an alcoholic, a simple country man (or woman), or something like that... Well, I hope that over time we will change this perception of us Russians... But that's another story — at least they're inviting us to Hollywood now, and that's progress.

Overall, it's comforting that they at least toned down the image of the “main terrorist” a bit, instead of making him out to be some mindless, cruel villain from Yugoslavia who just wants to beat up all the “American jerks”...

In general, the ending of the film is predictable, but I did not regret watching it at all, because this story is worth seeing at least once.
