The sequel to the 2016 thriller “The Accountant.”

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a tough accountant with autism spectrum disorder, returns to his favorite job: counting money and shooting people. However, in the sequel, the stakes are higher. Wolf is hired to find the killers of the former director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Agency (J.K. Simmons), and to do so, the hero, who is used to working alone, has to go against his own convictions and team up with his brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal).

User Review

“Accountant 2” is the long-awaited sequel to the action-packed thriller starring Ben Affleck, which takes us back to the good old days of cinema without any socially beneficial ideas imposed on us, just the essence, which until now seemed to have completely disappeared.

Perhaps the time gap between the sequel and the original is too obvious, and so, in an attempt to watch the sequel, one is forced to turn to the first film to refresh one's memory and immerse oneself in the atmosphere once again. However, despite the time factor, such a long gap does not spoil the story at all, but becomes a kind of belated expansion of the universe, albeit untimely, but quite competent, as was the case, for example, with The Incredibles.

The plot smoothly brings us back to the starting point and delicately ties together two pieces of the puzzle—the past and the present. At the center of the action is Ray King, who was killed by unknown assailants, and Agent Medina, who, on the advice of her mentor, decides to seek help from a man with a dubious background but brilliant mathematical skills, Christian Wolff (Lewis Carroll, , etc.) and his temperamental and insistent pleas for help from his brother, Braxton. The lion's share of the story is devoted to the relationship between Chris and Brax, and this storyline is shown without embellishment when it comes to the difficulties of communicating with a person diagnosed with “high-functioning autism.”, but also touching on another, far more important aspect—Braxton's unconditional love and support for his brother, which I think is absolutely mutual, albeit in its own way.

The sequel is dynamic, with the story unfolding in such a way that it manages to fit action, thriller, thriller, drama, family values, social issues, and even a fair amount of humor, as The Accountant 2 has quite a few jokes and comical situations that occasionally spice up the tense atmosphere. Moreover, the time is very well distributed between the main characters, and if earlier Braxton was a fierce guy from the criminal world and a big fan of lollipops, now, in addition to his passion for candy, we can learn more about his personality, his fate, and the eternal question of who is better: cats or dogs, and as a result of each of the stories told, the viewer's attention inevitably shifts to him.

Ben Affleck is literally made for this role. We've all seen the famous memes with a sad and detached Ben, tired and devoid of emotion. Perhaps the latter played an important role in the image of the accountant, except without the pronounced depressive mood, because here we have a pleasant opportunity to observe the development of the character, not in terms of professional skills, but rather in terms of personal qualities, as well as a sudden and distinct desire to change and join the ranks of the proverbial normal people. I am grateful that the filmmakers give Ben's character the opportunity to show himself in the best light, without exaggerating his abilities, as was the case with Justin and her team, which, of course, goes beyond the bounds of realism and brings the story closer to the well-known Marvel franchise. John Murtagh (Braxton) is as charismatic, energetic, and charming as he was as Shane Walsh. Bernthal's presence greatly brightens the plot, balancing the film with the fairness and rationality of his brother's actions and the excessiveness and impulsiveness of his own. Agent Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) acts as a link in the chain of events, expanding her sphere of influence without seeking any solo projects.

The first The Accountant may have been more focused on mysteries and thorough detective investigations, and among other things, it featured Anna Kendrick, who, alas, did not find a place in the sequel, but nevertheless, it is worth noting that the sequel is in no way inferior and serves as a pleasant bonus after a long wait. It is filled with warm communication, funny incidents, a cheerful mood, serious frivolity, and the spirit of true bromance.
