Thirty-five-year-old secretary Carla Bem has worked for many years as a secretary in a construction contracting office. Honest and hardworking, she arrives at work before everyone else and leaves after everyone else. Her responsibilities include literally everything: she is a typist and a telephone operator; she draws up estimates and takes complaints. And what does she get in return? No promotion, no one notices her efforts and competence, and she begins to feel irritated: “They pay me like a slave, treat me like dirt, and chase me around like a dog.” Carla is fed up. She is deaf, her life is boring and monotonous, and she doesn't know how to break out of it, but she believes she deserves more. But what can a not particularly pretty 35-year-old woman with a hearing aid expect in this man's world? Salvation comes in the form of Paul Angeli, a new intern whom she takes on as her assistant. Paul knows nothing about her work, but she is attracted to his youth and curiosity. It's a case of good meeting bad. Paul is 25 years old and hopeless as an assistant. But he has other qualities—he is a thief, just out of prison, where he served two years for theft, and he is ready to make a deal. “It takes two to tango.” She teaches him good manners, he teaches her bad ones. The first results are already encouraging...

Carla Bem, 35, works as a secretary at Sedim, a real estate agency. Her life is devoid of love, and at lunch she has to listen to her friends' adventures, which leave her feeling envious. Carla has a hearing problem, but with the help of a special hearing aid she is still able to hear music and people's voices on the telephone.

She has learned sign language, but rarely has the opportunity to use it among those around her. During breaks, she reads lips, listening to the taunts hurled at her by other workers from neighboring tables. Her only salvation from this living hell is to find a man and be loved. The employment office responds to Carla's application and sends 25-year-old intern Paul, who was recently released from prison, to work as her assistant.

The film can be divided into two parts: adventures in the office and adventures with Paul. Should these two parts be called “adventures”? If you think about it, this word is too loud and pop-oriented. This is not a pop story in the style of “The Wild, Wild West” or adventures like in “The Lord of the Rings.” The whole situation is not embellished or touched by forced pandering to the majority. Such films are not uncommon, but when such auteur cinema begins to draw the viewer in so strongly, and when everything that happens is digested without the slightest difficulty, such pictures rise a step above the rest, which, thanks to such films, fall a step below.

As a rule, such films are received with enthusiasm by the right people, who shower the director with respect for not giving in to Hollywood. Without succumbing to any restrictions or clichéd texts, the director keeps everyone watching in their seats until the very end. By adding his talent as a director and the difficult relationship between a former prisoner and a practically deaf girl to a typical crime story, Jacques Audiard probably had no idea how well he managed to convey all the emotions thanks to the remarkable French cast. Cassel, Gourmet, and Devo, who starred in Jacques's future and again successful film My Heart Stopped Beating... - all of them gave performances beyond praise.

From an ordinary crime story, Jacques created an unusual story, filling it with difficult relationships and excellent actors. The result is an excellent and exceptionally enjoyable French drama. Thank you to director Jacques Audiard. Unfortunately, his latest work ends in 2005. Let's hope this is just a temporary pause before the creation of a masterpiece.
