The Yankee Pedlar Inn is one of England's oldest hotels and is on the verge of closing. Claire and Luke are the last employees of this hotel, which has developed a rather poor reputation: ghosts are said to regularly appear within its walls. And so, the brave ghost hunters decide to unravel the hotel's mysteries and restore it to its former glory at all costs...

User Review

The critically low rating of this film, like no other, calls for an outcry against universal injustice. For the excessively idiotic title “The Innkeepers”, which apparently set the audience up for a slasher film dusted with mysticism, clashes with the light, ironic narrative style, which for most of the film is more reminiscent of a domestic comedy than a scary horror film with ghosts.

From the very first minutes, it is clear that if this is a “horror movie,” it is not a typical one, because the light colors of the sets, the amusing bickering of the two main characters, and the unhurried development of the story never once attempt to create the painful gloom of a delusional obsession. On the contrary, they set the tone for the peaceful everyday reality. The lively script and realistic dialogue set this film apart from many of its genre counterparts, which seem to compete with each other in the clumsy stupidity of their plot twists.
For this reason alone, the film can be an enjoyable way to pass the time. And then it all depends on your individual fear threshold, because by the end, the dark tones become increasingly overwhelming, and the story slowly becomes entangled in ghostly phenomena. But by that point, it's hard not to become attached to the charming heroine Sarah Paxton and even harder not to empathize with her misadventures. This is the main thing in the film's dramaturgy, and not the ostentatious exploitation of trivial techniques from old horror movies.
In the narrow corridors of the old hotel, lovers of subtext will find fertile ground, because the director is not averse to playing on the field of meaningful hints. The door slamming shut in the silent epilogue of the film seems to say: go away! The fatal tragedy of the main character's fate, who, despite everything, wanted to know the secrets of otherworldly wanderers, seems to warn of the dangers of striving for the mystical. The director divides reality into light and darkness, life and death. But the horror is not in this, but in the fact that she, born for light, joy, and love, so carelessly and selflessly plunges into darkness, completely not understanding that darkness is always inevitable, and life is only an island, a brief moment in the midst of the eternal ocean of death.
