At the time, I either missed this film or didn't remember it due to my age. Which may be for the best, because having watched it now with my many years of experience as a film buff, I can say with confidence that it is one of the best costume dramas conveying the era and customs of the 1930s. And the location shooting as a backdrop is simply aesthetically ecstatic.
This film is in no way comparable to Kenneth Branagh's 2020 adaptation of “The Golden Bough.” After watching the 1978 adaptation, which is now more than 40 years old, one cannot help but notice how cinema has deteriorated over time in terms of working in natural conditions and on location. Nowadays, everything is left to green screens and computer post-processing, creating a sterile, sometimes unnatural, soulless picture. When you watch this film, you have no doubt that this is exactly how it was at the time, that this is how people dressed and behaved, that this is what North Africa looked like. There is no sense of falseness.
Of course, many people are familiar with the plot, so there will probably be no intrigue for you. There was none for me either, and I simply enjoyed the actors, the costumes, the atmosphere of the era, and the delightful images.
The only slight downside for me was the unusual portrayal of Poirot by Peter Ustinov. Of course, thanks to David Suchet, his Poirot from the series of the same name has become so canonical that any deviation from the familiar image causes a slight dissonance. Even Kenneth Branagh's Poirot is closer in image to David Suchet's version. Peter Ustinov's Poirot has practically nothing in common with them.
All in all, I can definitely recommend this film to film buffs and cinema lovers, fans of retro aesthetics and classic cinema with naturalistic filming in natural settings.
