A masterpiece of cinema that has not received the attention it deserves. A subtle, aesthetic film. Excellent cinematography. Charismatic actors. A complete absence of Hollywood clichés. The scenes of violence, which are currently popular with mass audiences, are handled very skillfully, and the director deserves credit for not focusing on them at all.
It is difficult to imagine a more relevant topic these days. The film is about the powerlessness of the human mind in the face of the irrationality of the world. It is about the ancient forces that have been waging their battle within man since time immemorial, even if he denies their existence. It is about technological progress and spiritual degradation (“...but you came, scientists, geniuses. It is impossible to think less of the human spirit than you do. You are preoccupied with your own thoughts, you are indifferent, you believe in nothing...”).

The devil ends up in a psychiatric hospital in the 20th century and starts a cunning game with patients, doctors, and the people around them who are trying to resist ancient, devilish temptations. Some are destroyed by vanity, some by fear, some by guilt.

And the goal of this game, as it was thousands of years ago, is the first human sin—murder—the consequence of the reign of human reason in the absence of God. With this, the devil tries to prove: ‘I am more powerful than all your knowledge, stronger than loud phrases, stronger than the passage of time...’ That man at all times is just a man facing an eternal choice.
