One Battle After Another is not a film about struggle. Or rather, it is not only about struggle. Behind the external conflict lies an internal struggle—the struggle of a person for true freedom.
The film touches on an important theme: one dualistic extreme cannot destroy the other. That which exists in dependence on its opposite cannot refute it. To use one dualistic extreme to defeat the other means to remain captive to the system.
And the film exposes this paradox: in our dualistic world, a world of illusions, any search for freedom is doomed. As long as a person remains within the boundaries of human consciousness, they are merely jumping from one cell to another — if they are lucky, to a more spacious one. But changing jailers or breaking some chains does not mean becoming free. Because the very nature of human consciousness is bondage, total bondage.
In my opinion, this is why the feeling of longing for freedom that the film evokes is not just an emotion, but an existential reality. It is an unquenchable pain that will not go away as long as we remain within the limits of human perception.
Is there a way out? The film hints at it between the lines. The only way is not outside, but inside. It is the path of mysticism, the spiritual path that will ultimately lead to the true “I.” Only by dissolving the illusion of separation can one find the true Freedom that has always been within.
One Battle After Another is not a story about how to find freedom. It is a reminder of where to look for it.
