Dallas Sonnier is now three for three on how to properly make the perfect western.
Bone Tomahawk, Terror on the Prairie, and now Frontier Crucible form a trio of films that prove he knows exactly how to deliver the genre at its finest.
Director Travis Mills crafts an intense slow burn western that keeps you locked in and constantly guessing where the story will go next.
The cast is absolutely stacked, with every actor fitting their role to perfection.
Myles Clohessy, as Merrick Beckford, commands every scene with a grounded, rugged presence that shows the kind of true western grit and masculinity that most modern filmmaking has forgotten how to portray.
The film also marks the acting return of Armie Hammer after the false allegations against him, and he is a welcome sight. Hammer and Thomas Jane deliver the most brutal and unnerving performances in the movie as the villainous Edmund Fisher and Charlie "Mule" McKee. Every moment they are on screen leaves you tense and wondering what they will do next.
Visually, this may be the most beautiful western I have ever seen. Cinematographer Maxime Alexandre composes each shot with remarkable precision, turning every frame into a painting of the Wild West and its unforgiving landscapes.
Travis Mills' Frontier Crucible is raw, gritty, and unapologetically masculine filmmaking that takes us back to the classic American western with a more brutal and realistic look at the harsh realities of frontier life.
