The story revolves around a series of jewelry thefts taking place along the Pacific coast. The police conclude that all the robberies are linked to Colombian cartels. However, Detective Lu Lyubesnik believes that a single person is behind the crimes.

Bart Layton brought together Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan to pay homage to Mann’s "Heat". And for the most part, it worked—except for one small detail: the screenplay.

Hemsworth’s character has been robbing jewelry stores along California’s Highway 101 for years, following a strict set of rules for the perfect criminal. But apparently, that set of rules didn’t include “avoid a predictable arc.”

His antagonist, Keogan, plays a psychopathic biker—more of a charismatic device than a character. No backstory, no development: a dramatic entrance, a few scenes with raised eyebrows—and an exit at just the right moment. A classic catalyst.

It’s a special treat to recognize Nick Nolte as the bearded old man. He plays a crime boss nicknamed “Manny” and doesn’t appear often, but the mere fact of his presence warms the heart more than some of the lead roles do.

Bottom line: there’s enough momentum to keep you engaged, but the characters themselves are rather thinly drawn. If you’re nostalgic for ’90s crime thrillers, “Crime 101” delivers exactly that feeling—only at a more leisurely pace and with noticeably more beautiful cinematography. Los Angeles is beautifully captured.
