An unstable criminal—Arthur Jarrett, nicknamed Cody, who is under his mother’s care—carries out a daring robbery as part of a gang. To avoid the gas chamber, he voluntarily confesses to a crime he didn’t commit, serving a short two-year prison sentence. But while he’s away, Cody’s wife, Verna, kills her domineering mother-in-law in a plot with her lover—one of the gang members.
