Georges and Anna have spent their entire lives together, side by side, always looking out for one another. They are now in their eighties. Anna falls ill, and her life begins to gradually fade away: first her memory fails her, then her body refuses to obey her, and paralysis sets in. Georges tries to hire caregivers, but bitterly realizes he cannot expect them to offer warmth or genuine affection. He quits his teaching job at the conservatory to devote himself entirely to caring for his wife. He cannot imagine his beloved in a nursing home, as their adult daughter—who visits her parents from time to time—insists. These visits are a real ordeal for the family, whose life, it would seem, had unfolded in harmony and love…
