The 18th century. The story of an Austrian archduchess who, at the age of nineteen, was destined to become Queen of France.

User Review

Just recently, I started watching the anime *The Rose of Versailles*, which is also about Marie Antoinette. So this anime adaptation—even though it's more idealized and geared toward a younger female audience—is much more lively and less glamorized.

They could have crafted an excellent melodrama out of Marie Antoinette's life; they could have focused on her relationship with the French people—there were so many angles they could have explored. But no, what French crises? What are you talking about? Where's the ugly, fat king with kind blue eyes? Where's even a shred of political activity? Aside from the war in North America, I didn't see a thing. And even that was just mumbled about a couple of times before being forgotten.

The feud with Dubarry isn't really shown. If I hadn't known about it, I wouldn't even have understood what the problem was.

Marie Antoinette herself is a hollow figure, even despite her clever attempts to quote Rousseau. And Kirsten Dunst gave a terrible performance—if she even tried to act at all.

The whole movie is just a series of scenes showing all sorts of frivolous young ladies devouring pastries, picking out dresses and shoes, cuddling with their dogs, and drinking champagne. Sure, everyone knows how Marie chased after pleasures, but. it's portrayed in such a hollow way.

I really don't know what Sofia Coppola was trying to film there, but I didn't find Marie Antoinette in this movie.
