A film about the Wat Tyler Rebellion—the largest peasant uprising of 1381, which swept across England amid political and economic turmoil. Among other things, Tyler demanded the abolition of serfdom.

User Review

How many movies do you know about uprisings by discontented peasants against arrogant feudal lords? Most likely, you’ll think of *Braveheart*, any of the *Robin Hood* movies, and perhaps *Spartacus* will come to mind as well (even if the theme is slightly different).

So Paul Greengrass decided to make his own statement about arrogant feudal lords (tech-feudal lords had better brace themselves): he had already vigorously criticized the system in the *Bourne* series, *Captain Phillips*, and so on. —and chose the story of Wat Tyler’s rebellion (not particularly well-known in the Russian-speaking world), in which peasants in 14th-century England revolted following exorbitant taxes and outbreaks of the plague. The only thing is that in the film, the story is told not from Wat Tyler’s perspective, but from that of an unnamed Plowman (so named because of his occupation)—and it is he whom Andrew Garfield plays.

And the film is a classic adaptation of any uprising: the righteous, suffering peasants who simply want to be heard and defend their rights, pitted against the despicable, corrupt feudal lords and their minions, who cheat and steal—led by a young king afraid to grow up. You can find out how the real uprising ended on Wikipedia, but in the film, the ending is, it seems to me, directed at the powerful of this world: watch out, because, to paraphrase Marx, “the peasantry has nothing to lose but their chains.”

The movie turned out to be very mediocre: we don’t really have time to witness the characters’ suffering or empathize with them in any way before they immediately start killing and rebelling. And sure, I support them, but watching all of this isn’t particularly interesting. The battles in the film, to put it mildly, are nothing like *Braveheart*: instead of large-scale battles, we get a couple of gentlemanly (and not-so-gentlemanly) one-on-one fights throughout the entire movie, while the rest of the runtime is filled with the characters WALKING and occasionally talking, explaining their motivations.

As a jab at the modern elite, it’s very clumsy; as a movie, it’s pretty boring—even though Andrew Garfield, caked in mud, Jamie Bell as a slightly mad preacher, and Cosmo Jarvis as the sullen leader of the rebellion all give excellent performances and are perfectly cast.
